After reading some of the tactics discussion, I perceived that people are playing narrow when playing AWAY matches.
Narrow will make the team more compact and easier to defend, but also it will not creates a lot of chances.
Until now I'm still playing Wide both Home and Away and has moderate success, it's true that I was forced to realize a lot of my Legendary Goalkeeprs Iker Cassilas to keep me out of trouble and it's true that strong side from mid table have quite a lot of shots, however most often I create chances and clinical finishing strikers often win the game for me before the other team has a chance to settle.
And I'm curious, is the WIDTH really important when talking about defending? I was thinking as long as I set mentality for wingers to normal, they should come down and help defending as well.
Anyone has used Narrow Width games? Can you gives me some insight into your games?

From what I've seen, width only takes effect when you have possession.
Without the ball, width is the same regardless of the slider setting.

i found out that playing narrow makes my team defensively sound but i get punished down the flanks. that is why i use normal width unless i am playing a defensive team; then i play wide so i can stretch their defence and create chances. however, in my experience what decides the width of your team is the formation. e.g. when you play with with 5 men in midfield you can afford to play ultra wide because the holes that are created by playing too wide will be filled by the many players in th centre of the pitch. on the other hand playing ultra wide with only 2 men in the centre of the pitch will leave far too many holes in in your team which will leave you exposed especially to through balls. thats what i think anyway |

I just try the narrow width in the game with Chelsea. It works wonders in the aspect that Chelsea only have 2 shots in my goals in the 1st half but dominate with 55% possession.
I also only have 2 shots but 1 goal.
Games end, Chelsea dominate with 4 shots. I won 2 - 0 with 4 shots, 48% possession.
I'm not happy, cause the chances are so far and few, if not for the clinical finish, the game would be a bore draw.
How could I retain the same defensive tight but create more chances though?

I tend to keep the width on normal for home and away. The only time I will change this is if I play a side who don't use wingers. Then I play slightly wide, due to the extra space my wingers should have. Apart from that is keep it same.
Remember the wider the width the more space between players.
The narrower the width, the more crowded your players will be.

After recently carrying out a width experiment, it was very apparent that width only comes into play when you are attacking. All teams defend naturally narrow. Coupled with a short passing game, a very wide formation can be deadly. The only thing you have to worry about is the counter attack. Due to the wide nature of your formation, your team will be spread out across the pitch and could potentially take a while to get back into defensive position. I have not tested this yet though so I have no proof. I actually noticed that the wider the formation the higher the possession rate with a very short passing system. Personally, I play extemely wide at home, and as Cleon mentioned, I keep it on normal for away matches.
