After watching many matches on full mode it seems that in FM08 defensive line affects the whole team positioning (when not in possession). When I set it to deepest, my midfield also position themselves deeper. The same when I set DL to the highest notch: My midfielders stand higher up the pitch when my team lose the ball. Is that mentality determine where the players position themselves from the defensive line, so tweaking only the DL won`t affect the distances between players?
Yes there are lots of other threads ..but so much has changed in 8.0.1.
What I have seen is; mentality do NOT change a players position when defending.
Its the same when your team attack..I set my right mc on mentality 5 and my left mc on 16, and they will still keep a parallel line.
Try set both your fullbacks on 20 mentality..and watch there positions when you defend; yes they keep a line with the 2 central defenders(set to 5 mentality).
Mentality does not change players position alot..almost none.
Think about it as is says; mentality - the mentality .
Mainly its a "risk" factor slider, how often will he make an attacking move etc...
There is a little line in the patch notes;
- Changed pass risk assessment to reflect mentality setting and flair a little more.
You will ofcourse see the player with a high mentality move abit further up the field when attacking compared to one on low setting.
But thats becourse you gave him an offensive role for the match.
rashidi1. Does this now mean that I can set a "team" mentality of, say 14/attacking and my defenders will still maintain their defensive positions and not be caught out of position? I have alwats preferred to try and set up "individual" instructions and then try to control the match with the "team" mentality, passing and tempo controls.
If you can visualise, I am trying to get the team to attack and defend together keeping the shape of my original formation. Therefore there will never be a large gap between my defence, midfield and attack.
Why would you give the central DC's an attacking role for any match?.
Its much to risky. Unless you have players like Franz Beckenbauer, Ronald Koeman or Franco Baresi - those kind of players with superb tactical capabilities; game reading, anticipation, positioning) and technique (passing, vision on the pitch) .
