I suppose it depends on how you define a sleeping giant - I'd have thought it was a club with the potential to be a 'big' team in the right conditions. Not sure that any of the third division mob at present qualify.
Ayr, Raith, Morton, Stirling would be possibles in div 2, St Johnstone, Dundee, Hamilton, Partick in div 1? Though now we're on to the definition of sleeping.
i love these exact sciences! |

:? A sleeping giant is a team that was once very successful but is now pants and outside of the top divisions, such as Huddersfield.

| Would they not need to have the potential to be successful again? To draw the crowds like they did? For example, Queen's Park won titles and had tens of thousands at the games, that would never happen again due to the old firm scourge. Ditto Dumbarton and many other scottish sides.

| Since now any team is capable of increasing it's stadium capacity, that would mean that every single team in FM is a sleeping giant.

I was going to post a thread asking 'what are you hoping to achieve?' as i also was going to mention about what defines a LLM side. For example I decided I'd play as Derry City in the Irish league as thats where I came from originally. However as withs Siggy and TNS in the Welsh league they are pretty much the Man U of their division and you cant really take them anywhere beyond that. With teams in the English conference or lower divisions you have the potential to take them all the way to the top. Derry City cant really do much more as they are at the top of their game but can never compete with the big boys because nomatter how well they do they will always be part timers and have a small population of fans to draw upon. As typified by this seasons run in Europe in real life where they beat Gothenburg (twice), hammered Gretna and even held Paris SG to a goaless draw at home only to go out 2-0 away. They just missed out on the group stages. Theres no way I can cap this even though Derry is really the same standard as a lower English Championship or Div 1 side - in the game attributes anyway. Even if i won everything Domestic and if i attracted a few decent players from abroad somehow all I can do is hope to get a bit further in Europe. I will never be up there with the top Eng Prem teams for example as I wont ever be able to attract 40,000 plus people to my stadium to pay for my World beating team. So my point is that I am wondering if i should just give up and start with a lower league English team with the potential to become a massive team in Europe if not the World?
I feel like I am restricted with my team... although they are one of they best in their environment but they are simply too underpopulated to become anything like a major force in football. Even if some mad Billionare bought the club and managed to buy in loads of huge names it still wouldnt be able to go much further than it has already.

I always think that 'sleeping giant' is a bit of a hollow expression. Lots of teams in lots of leagues were succesful for a while sometime in the distant past.
Football changed a lot since most of them enjoyed some succes. It's not the same game anymore, they are not the same teams anymore. For most 'sleeping giants' there is no way in hell that they'll enjoy succes for any foreseeable future.
Are these 'sleeping giant'-sayers parrot salesmen?

It makes me laugh to see Cardiff referred to as sleeping giants over the last few seasons. We won the FA Cup once, finished runner up in the (old, old) first division and that's about it.
