Well at the very least how's about a preview function so that a poster can proof-read his/her post and check any included links are working properly?

If they don't want to allow post editing then a preview function is the perfect compromise.

Why dont posters just read what they have typed before hitting the "post now" button- it will not get round all typos but will surely help with the major ones?

The edit function has been tried before a number of times but has been stopped because of constant misuse.
