[fm2006] Why use only 1024 x 768 for backgrounds? Post #1 | | Newb

Who can explain why I should stick with a 1024 x 768 picture for my backgrounds? I have tried a bigger one, which seemed to work, but all I read about is "use 1024 x 768", so probably there is more to it than that.

Background images that aren't 1024x768 will be resized to 1024x768 (or whatever your screen resolution is). Resizing of the image may distort it depending on its pattern and orginal dimension.

To be honest I'd say the bigger the image the better (within reason), as long as an image is in the right format (roughly 4:3).
As was said the image just gets resized. However, bigger images still look great when made smaller whilst smaller images made bigger look terrible.
People are also far more likley to run the game at more than 1024x768 so bigger images would suit them.

My 17" monitor is currently displaying everything in 1280 x 1024. So if I am correct, then I can best look for any picture that has those dimensions?
Then it doesn't have to be resized and still has all the quality, and does not mess up the game.
Is that correct Michaelmurrayuk and Rodestock?

Sure is Jergen
If you are runnign at 1280x1024 then pictures of that size are going to look better. Pictures at 1024x760 would be made bigger and lose quality.

haha radestock... I saw I spelled your name wrong, but didn't want to spend another post only to write it right again. Should be nice if we would have an option to edit or messages. Anyway, my apologies.
About those backgrounds, I tried to calculate that 4:3 ratio with my backgrounds. 1600 x 1200 is a perfect 4:3. But 1280 x 1024 is not. It's almost, but it still isn't. 1024 x 768 is 4:3 again.
If I choose a background size, which suits my monitor, but is not 4:3, does that effect my game? Does the game have to calculate more, graphically, I mean?

There wouldn't be any difference at all making them fit your screen resolution. LCD's do go for a more square resolution so if they look better in your game at that ratio then go for it.

Okidoki  Then I go for the best picture that I can find. Thanks Radestock (and Michaelmurrayuk).
