After the latest Premier League TV deal threatened to take even more money from the grass roots game and the football league, English non-league clubs had a decision to make - Stay loyal to the Football Association and perish, or break out on their own and fight toe to toe with the big boys for money, power and survival. The Alternative Football Association was born. 160 clubs, split over seven leagues, were willing to leave the English Football Association behind to battle for their own survival. And UEFA was right behind them all the way. The first season of the First Division was also going to be televised by the BBC.
