some of you may of seen this in the discussions part but i was told to move it, so..

hi guys, its my first post but ive been browsing FM forums for years now.

since the good old championship manager days ive fell in love with them and the newer football managers.

ive always created my own tactics on the previous games and they work 9 times out of 10, if they failed me i would usually download a player made tactic off a forum and that would usually work too.

anyway my question is, since ive had FM 2007 no matter what ive tried i simply cannot be successful. its been going on for months now, ill start a new game, do absolutely **** then quit again after a few seasons (if im not sacked), then ill leave it a few weeks or so and try again, but to no avail.

ive tried creating my own tactics, which are usually pretty decent, especially because im usually man united - and they didnt work at all.

then i tried downloading tactics and none of them work either - with or without tweaking.

i let the ass man do team talks etc etc, ive tried it hundreds of times now and its getting annoying, i realise FM 2007 is more realistic and harder than the older versions but i dont want to stop playing - so im asking for help.

whenever im man united its almost always a mid table finish, ive tried everything i can think of and its getting me nowhere.

im not criticising the game because i absolutely love it, i just cant be successful.

ive also read the threads about creating your own tactics which hardly worked for me either.

so can i get peoples opinions? any ideas what im doing that is so wrong?

p.s i just finished a season with the mancs and came 18th, alot of my players have been poached but i got offered a new contract! anyway i think starting fresh in the championship would be good for me.

any advice then?

a lot of this game is based upon countering the opposition, so keep the match display on formation and see what the opposition does. It often starts with a 4-4-2 both home and away, so find a way to counter that, and a clue is in the arrows of the wingers, if they have none or push on. The opposition loves the 4-2-4 in the dying moments which used to be a real bugbear of mine as its so unrealistic, but can be countered.

I would say that Rachidi had it spot on a while back when he said success was down to defensive line slider position, push up when attacking and tick "play offside" - and defend deep and counter when playing a good team or defending a lead when the opposition go for it. The formation of choice tends to be the 4-4-2 but have a look at some of the other topics for a base formation! I would strongly suggest however, putting your best header of the ball on the "near post flick on" during courners and setting courners to near post. 15+ goals a season.

the reason i think im doing something wrong is because after reading through these forums i dont think ive seen one person do this badly with man u, i mean 18th is pretty dismal.

i used wwfans 4-4-2 tactics for each different game, home, away, SUS etc, and they didnt seem to work. ive also tried nearly every other tactic, they also dont work for me.

thats a good idea about the defensive line though, ill have to try that, and the near post flick on sounds similar to the "stand on edge of area" on FM 05

4-2-4 isnt realistic tell that to Sir Alex Fergusson during his reign at manchester United has used that formation over 40 times, Steve MacLaren Used it over 5 times just in Europe with boro ata it got them far so dont tell me its unrealistic cause many quality managers use this system when they're in despressate need of a goal.

sure, i used my own 4-4-2 tactics for about 10 games which were useless, so i decided to try wwfans 4-4-2 RoO set, home attack for games in which i was favourite to win, away for tough away games etc etc.

after using them i came 18th, im not criticising his tactics, because ive had no success with whichever tactic i use.

my strongest and most frequent 11 was -

van der sar

rafinha, g. neville, vidic, marcelo

jesus navas, joao moutinho, carrick, ronaldo

rooney, huntelaar

top scorer was rooney with 21, i hardly scored any goals..

i got a screenie of my league position, is there a way to upload it without registering with another photo site thingy?

I didnt mean the formation wasn't realistic, I totally appreciate 4-2-4 being used, just the 3 goals in 10 minutes if often gets on this game

I agree with you 100%. And I DO think this game is too hard and I AM complaining about it! Nothing is working for me

in all honesty, you made alot of alterations of the original united side which just didnt need any of those changes. first thing you need to do when taking over a team is to go into the information menu and find out the teams personality and then make signings that fit in with that mentality, it helps the new players to gel quicker, im assuming that when you checked the ass/man screen it said something along the lines of they had not yet found a good level of understanding. it is possible to be successful on this game it just requires patience and it needs the player to enter the game with no expectations, thats the only way you'll learn otherwise you'll just get frustrated by the vastly inferior oposition who you've spent the entire match besiging their box only for the to apparently turn into a team of supermen in the third game of the season just by switching to 424 making your defence look like a bunch of sunday leaguers... then again by paying more attention i just went on a 29 game unbeaten run with my west ham team in the premierleague.... which restored my faith in this annoying game... then again i did start playing fm06 and couldnt beleve how easy it was, meh

just remembered, if the computer switchs to a 4-2-4 just counter it with a counter attacking 4-1-4-1 usually snatchs me a goal in the dying minutes when the computers commited to attack
