Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default mid seasson frustration

I have been usiing Ruff's 4132 formation and tactics and for the better part of the season this has worked a treat. Soince January though I have come well and truly back to the pack all the teams seem to have countered my formation and tactics. I haven't changed the team or anything else so I'm suprised that I'm struggling now. This is my for time playing football manager so I'm wondering is the AI that adaptable? If so how to I beat it again or atleast say something bad to hurt it's feelings Any help would be appreciated.

the mid season slump happens when you have been doing very well. this means that the pre-match odds will almost always be against the opposition which means that most teams will start to play defensively aginst you (e.g. 442 formation with no arrows,451 formations). the following are some of the ways you can break down their defensive tactics:
-lower the defensive line.
-increase width (stretch their defense)
-make sure my wingers and fullbacks are pushing forward (increase preasure on them + more people in and around their box)
-mixed focus passing, stop using target men and playmakers (they will possibly be marked out of the game)
-increase creative freedom - 10 for the wide players (they will be less likely to come inside) , 15+ for the front players (makes them break out of their instuctions and helps them look for space and do something out of the ordinary.

this worked for me, i only hope it works for you.

Thanks Iceman shall give it a whirl when will it be ok to go back to old tactics? should I now only use them when I'm not favourite?

sorry i also forgot to tell you that if they play with one striker, make sure he does Not get into the game beacause he is the one who will start their attacks and bring other players into the game (close him down using opposition instruction and tight mark him etc).

i am not quit sure to be honest. i rhink you should try the original tactic in that situation and see what happens.
