You stated yourself though that this player was appointed because he was an "old-time friend". Remember Juventus signing some "player" from Libya with a famous daddy? I bet that wasn't because of his football skills either.
The point is: just because there are some idiotic chairmans signing their relatives or friends to do them a favor, it doesn't make it more realistic to do so as a rule of thumb.
If your chairman tells you to buy some certain player, or you'll get fired, then it's okay to do so without scouting him. If all your 6 goalkeepers are injured, and it's the last day of the transfer list, and you have only one option open, then do it by all means.
But under normal circumstances, there is absolutely no reason to not scout a player.

I'd actually assume that since the manager had a close friend who played in goals he'd have seen him a few times and would know how decent he is/was, at least in an emergency - in other words he'd have scouted the player himself.

Frankly, I don't see the point in not scouting. Why is this even a debate?

Because we are open-minded people and LLM is about playing in a realistic way, and not in a forced-upon-you way.

This goalkeeper example is poor, to be honest.
Saying that the team signed the player without scouting him is the same as saying that, if you move clubs, you have to clear your shortlist, because players haven't been scouted by your current club. |

Oxford were LLM in the demo as it was the lowest English league - Conference. I'm sure it doesn't say in the rules that you have to pick the worst team in the lowest division. (That would be completely unfair)

No, it doesn't. But picking the best team in the division is not encouraged, as well.

Fair enough. Didn't realise they were the best team. The way they played for me I would truly beg to differ. Only managed to gain promotion as the last day of the season all four teams above me lost and we got a draw.
Don't get me wrong, I had worse results with Moor Green etc, but they are poor!

I don't know if they are the best team in Conference National, Robert. But they have just been relegated, and that indicates that they probably are. There's no problem in playing with a recently relegated team, anyway.
But, given that Conference National is not the lowest available league in England, it would be better for you to create a new game. It's easier and more painless to do now, after you've played only one season .

Yer your right, but I'm not sure whether I can do it to myself. I always play as Moor Green and I've never felt so much heart ache and misery.
I guess it's those happy days of LLM!
