I'm managing Caernarfon in the Welsh Premier League, and I'm coming to realize over a few seasons that everyone is playing for fourth place behind Rhyl, Llanelli, and TNS. No one can compete with their transfer budgets. Frankly I'm okay with that--fourth place gets you a place in Euro Vase (and a prompt beating) so I strive for that.
At the beginning of a new season one of the top three WPL clubs secured on loan a young central midfielder from a VERY GOOD EPL club. A little annoying, but not extreme, I thought. Once the new guy reports he says through the media that he is keen on signing on with his new team permanently . . . WHAT!!! This guy wants to move to the WPL from the EPL--mind you a prominent club in the EPL. So I scouted him--He's got fantastic physical ratings, great mental ratings, and ok technical ratings. So he's not top EPL quality.
I will say this--he would be the best player on my team--but I wouldn't sign him. Anyone who's given up on themselves to this extent is not worth it in my book.
There are only two full-time professional clubs in the Welsh Premier (TNS and Llanelli), with Rhyl being one of the stronger part-timers, and so it's realistic that they would be the only clubs that might be attractive to 'foreign' professionals.
Perhaps he felt he was guaranteed first team football in Wales, where he might not in England...
