I've not found reference in the manual to the coloured bar on matchdays that ebbs and flows between you and your opponent's colour.

Does this represent possession, or the whereabouts of the ball in relation to each end of the pitch?

Think it's possession, on all the old champ mans and the newer football managers isn't it possession in the last 5 minutes?

Not certain but it's definitely nothing to do with the position of the ball in relation to the goals.
