I've noticed that playing-against-a-former-player thing. More often than not that worthless DR you offloaded for 20k and averaging a 6 suddenly plays a 9 and singlehandedly beats your £200m team.
Stupid really, but there you are.

I totally agree with the comments on this thread, the match engine is very poor at the momnet, and worse than that, it is boring.
Every game is the same routine, I get 15-25 chances in a match, about 7-8 on target, miss about 6 sitters. The AI gets 5-6 chances, 1 or 2 on target. I win 3 out of 4 and the fourth one the AI wins 1-0 against the run of play. I get about 3 "excellent interventions" per match, the AI gets between 10-12 "excellent interventions".
One and half seasons in, and it is boring, predictable and generally uninspiring. I really hope they have done some serious work on this for patch, or else FM08 looks like curing my addiction to this series.

I agree with oldsoldier reincarnated too , they should chose a better way to counter super tactics rather than allow AI to score and win with much fewer chances

The only thing resembling a super tactic in Fm7 was the AI 4-2-4. No human player could replicate that and no human super tactic was designed, so perhaps they should have just concentrated on ironing out the problems with FM7’s engine (gk distribution etc).
This engine does seem to have taken away any possibility that a team could mount a fight back of their own volition. For example, you’ve selected a squad that is at least the equal of your opponent and given them a perfectly sensible tactic and instructions. They go 1-0 down the nanosecond you start the match. Instead of leaving things as they are to check if this was merely bad luck and see if your team will come back into the game, you HAVE to hit tactics immediately and change things around. Otherwise it’s goal-goal-goal-goal. A cricket score by half time. The players have no power to fight back, it is entirely down to tactical tweaks. If one thing goes wrong, the default assumption is that humiliation is on the cards and fundamental changes are immediately required.

I've only played 2/3 of a season with Fiorentina so it's nowhere near enough to judge the match engine vs the whole maelstrom of other variables (e.g. my tactics and players' hidden attributes yada yada), but they are the most ludicrously inconsistent team I've ever managed - more so than my old CM 01/02 Preston North End team who managed to both score and concede well over 100 goals in a Div 1 season, and that's saying something!
So far we've neither won, lost or drawn more than 2 games in a row and most times we take the lead there is an inevitability that the AI will equalise and we will go to sleep despite me having attacking tactics set.
Morale is generally not very good yet in amongst defeats to Catania, Empoli, Genoa and draws vs similar clubs we win 1-4 away to Inter and smash Parma 6-0 in the first half, the latter with just 7/11 shots on target as oppose to the 22 shots we had in our 0-0 draw with Dinamo Bucharest.
Mebee I'm just a crap manager, but I'm not sure what I should be doing differently! My players ignore my instructions anyway so trying to alter my tactics based on the opposition seems a waste of time and when some games we create very little and score the lot and other games we create loads and score none and then there are the games were we play absolutely appallingly and create nothing all game.

It feels to me (and I may well be wrong) that there is a random event generator at start of every match (dice throw if I was being cruel  ).
If you fail this event, then the tactics, instructions, form, abilities etc of your tesm are completely ignored and "special" result inserted from the pre programmed code.
I think this random event gets easier to pass as your reputation, the team reputation and morale etc improve so the spurious results gets fewer and further between.

I have stopped playing the game because my players simply refused to close down the opposition. I was playing with Arsenal. I am expecting this to be fixed on the patch because it's a major bug.
However, the other thing I noticed was how much possession other teams were getting. To be honest, if you have a team like Arsenal where player stats, especially for passing, are far higher than other teams - you should be getting the lion's share of possession at the very least.
It's as if FM08 is not the slightest bit interested in player stats, but it's all about teamtalks and morale etc. and what it thinks will happen to a team on a good or bad run.
If you are playing with a world class team you should be winning games regularly even if your tactics are quite poor, but if you want a challenge you drop divisions and pick a more difficult job.

Yeah, I noticed the possession thing too. I had something like 38% possession at home to AEK Athens or some similarly inferior team and plenty of other examples too where we just didn't seem to get hold of the ball enough despite having superior players.

| I have had this a few times and watched it destroy my team. The worst thing is, the match ratings are more an indicator of morale than actual performance, and thus players with low match ratings are more likely to make mistakes.
Problem here is that my team can be scored on right off kickoff and every player drops to a 5 match rating. Wtf? Most of them were not even involved and their stats are zeros accross the board. Why the 5? Morale... Thus, the match is going to be tough.
