Closing down and man marking are totally bizzare in this version, if a player is runniong back to his position and the ball comes near him, he continues running back to his position and leaves it to the next nearest player to pick up the ball, but sometimes the nearest player wants to leave it for theplayer going back to his position, so no-one picks up the ball at all.
Man marking seems to involve standing next to a striker and gently escorting him into the 6 yard box so he can burst the back of the net, its more like come dancing than football.
tbh I wasn't do to badly the way i was, only problem was the goals that were been scored against me more often than not were ridiculous defensive errors i.e. the players were all over the fricking place for no reason.
I have now switched to tight zonal marking for my CBs with closing down in own area only. If it looks like the opposition CF is causing to many problems i will switch to tight man mark with closing down in own area only. Seems to be working for me, i have only lost one in seven (away to west ham with Bellamy all over the ****ing place ) Oh and I have the tackling on Hard and the creative freedom right down.
I never put centre backs on man mark, always zonal. They get too tight and decent strikers will make mince meat out of them. However, I do put my full backs on man mark, as I want them to press the wingers and stop crosses coming in.
Unfortunately, with FM08, because of the closing down bug, it doesn't work anyway.
The closing down marker is not very well constructed. You would think that the higher you move the slider the more your player will close down the player closest to him, but it's the opposite, the higher you have it the more they will move out of position closing down anyone.
That's the principle at least - although, as I said, it doesn't seem to work at all on FM08.
