I have read that some use it for the database - is very useful for finding players date of births, country of origin etc. Otherwise, I very much doubt they have time to play it.

I manage a high school team in the US. I play it all the time. It's helped me to decide that I can't keep playing under our state's league rules anymore. There is no relegation and the team I manage is more like East Stirlingshire (no offense fans) as far as reputation and facilities go.
I am quitting coaching at the high school level on Tuesday to start work creating and establishing my own amateur club because of my managing experiences with FM. Promotions, relegations, and transfers...loving the chance to move up or down based on the quality of my players. We don't have that promotion/relegation philosophy here in the US for any of our sports (it's a shame).
I don't suppose that out here in FM world, there isn't some sugar daddy like Wexford's owner just wanting to invest in some U-18 soccer in the states? Beware, my reputation is obscure, but I did win a local cup title two years ago and I do have current national licensing for the youth levels.

Earlier in the decade, SI interviewed Demetrio Albertini about his love of the game. I know he was pretty fond of it, and I think he mentioned some other Italian footballers who also enjoyed CM.

I remember a while ago there was a small news story about a player from (not the premiership) who played an FM and was upset that he had been rated so poorly, he said (words to the effect of) I like the game but ingame I bought me and i was useless, I'll have to have a word with SI about that.
I'm sure a lot of players play it as believe it or not footballers have a lot of free time (train for 18 hours a week and play for at most 4..that leaves many hours).
