Need some clarification on Free Transfers in Premiership
In my first season as Aston Villa, I just signed Marcus Berg from Groningen by the "approach to sign" option as his contract was due to expire. Everything went through, he accepted my offer and arrived at my club on the 2nd of December 2007...but this is what I'm not sure about, shouldn't he only arrive when the transfer windows re-open in January, or have I just misunderstood the rules?
Thanks!

In england, when trying to sign players on free you can only 'approach to sign' when there is a month left to run on their contracts, if your a foreign club or you are an english club trying to sign a player who players for a foreign club you can 'approach to sign' when there is 6 months left to run.
Hope that cleared it up.

If you go to the League screen and select rules it shows that free transfers (and loans for lower english leagues) have additional transfer windows.
Strange thing is on my rules screen it says the free transfer window closes on the 26th of November for the EPL .
The player has no contract and unless i'm mistaken a player without a contract can sign at any time during the season
