I have read a few posts by people asking how to install, skins, backgrounds etc. I am no expert but i have manged to get my graphics downloads to work, here is what i did.
SKINS
1) Download your required skin (im using Steklo skin)
2) Once downloaded use winrar to extract to the following folder: C:/DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS/The file titled with your name(mine is simon)/my documents/sports interactive/football manager 2008/skins
3) Return to your game or load game up and on the main game screen click on options and then click on preferences.
4) When youre in preferences click on Display/Sound
5) In the window settings section click on the drop down arrow and it will list the available skins. Select the skin you require.
6) I then made sure that 'use skin cache' and 'Always reload skin on confirm' were unticked. Click on confirm
7) Reload game again and the new skin should be visible in the game.
BACKGROUNDS
1) Download required background file (im using superturks stadium backgrounds file)
2) Repeat as step 2 in the skins section, only this time you will have to make a file called graphics, so the path should look like this:C:/DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS/The file titled with your name(mine is simon)/my documents/sports interactive/football manager 2008/graphics. (It may be easier to make the new graphics folder before extraxting with winrar)
3) Reload or return to game and once again go into options then preferences
4) Click on display/sound' and in the display settings make sure that 'show background pictures' is ticked. click on confirm
5) When you go to the matchday screen the relevant stadium image should become visible on screen.
Like i said at the start i am no expert and all i can do is tell you what worked for me. I have attached some images for reference. The first is my preferences screen, the second is my matchday screen and the third is the main page with the steklo skin
