i have updated my football manager 2007 with the number 2 patch and it works but i then take that database and update it with my own personal preferences, i then press save and it asks me to make a new one so i name it. Then when i load up my game it does not ask me what database to use and the updates i made myself are not there. PLEASE HELP ME!

Try moving your edited database from:

Documents and settings\your name\my documents\sports interactive\football manager 2007\db

to:

program files\sports interactive\football manager 2007\data\db

Remember to move your db back if you want to edit it further down the line.
