It seems like tactics are getting too complicated for me. Every time I make a tactic it fails miserably in the few games I play with it and I always resort to coming here and downloading a pre-tested tactic. Has the FM series started catering to the more hardcore tinkerers or are tactics just not like the good ol' days of CM3 with 4-1-3-2?

I was the same as u, however, i now keep this as simple as possible. As u say back to the good old days. i dont bother with much i jus assess my squad and make a decision about how they should play. make a tactic as simple as possible and stick to it. I find teams adapt quicker to simple tactics and recently i have been more successful than ever before on any fm or cm.

you are right about keeping tactics simple mate. i am currently using a defult 4-4-2 with man u and only tweak the width, tempo, passing and some times defensive line. i am doing great(amezin) in all competitions and i dominate every game even against top 4 teams. (beat arsenal 3-0 and chelsea 3-1 + i have the best scoring record and defensive record in all competitions). football manager is quite easy as long as you keep your tactics simple and adapt them to play against the opposition.(currently on a 17 game winning streak and scoring 4 fun - scored 20 in last 4 games)

Do you choose tactics to suit the opposition? i.e. before every game? or do you have a standard way of playing and stick to it?
I currently use attack minded tactics for home games and counter attacking tactics for away games. To be honest i can't be ar*ed with changing my tactics week in week out.

With Spurs I've stuck with same tactics every game 4-4-2 Att/wide no changes during game
Drew away to Hearts 1-1 without them having a shot on goal then 20 games without dropping a point, then lost 4-1 away Birmingham and 1-1 draw against Charlton after just winning 7-0 against Villa, now back to winning ways.
Simple and stick with it, the game will give you an off day without playing with tactics.

So I went back to the drawing board and turns out you guys are right. Just a simple 442 modded for the team can do wonders!
