* NOTE: I've searched for similar topics but can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Apologies if this is already covered elsewhere. *

I'm doing fairly well in most aspects of the game but I just can't seem to get anywhere with Free Kicks. Despite having takers with good attributes (Free kicks, technique, long shots, decisions) and trying different free kick options under Team Instructions, I keep getting the same scenario; in potentially good positions, my kicker ignores the goal and keeps whacking the ball anywhere between 5-50 yards to the left or right, or sometimes even backwards towards my own back line or goalkeeper, which can result not only in a missed opportunity to score but often a disastrous interception and breakaway by the other team.

If someone can explain what I'm doing wrong, that would be great, but if not can someone please suggest the best Team Instructions Free Kick option and any other instructions that need to be taken into account (for example, does my designated free kick taker need to have Long Shots set to Often under their Individual Instructions?)
