I find the trick is to try and restrict your strikers to 3 or 4 chances/game. If they have too many shots at goal their ontarget and goal ratio is usually low (either because you are creating poor chances or the match engine has to restrict the scoreline artificially)which lowers their confidence and they start missing sitters.
I set my strikers to long shots rarely (even with 20 for long shots the on target and goal ratio is poor for 25-30 yarders). Then either increase their ttb's and rwb or lower creative freedom untill they stop shooting as soon as they have the ball.
If you lower the tempo or shorten passing (or take counter attack off) you increase the time taken to get the ball forward and tend to get fewer but better quality chances. Your midfield will look at their options before passing and there is a higher chance of them spotting a striker who has made a run and gotten 5 yards on his marker rather than just putting it in the box and letting the striker take a potshot while being challenged.
If your getting 10-20 attempts with 50%+ ontarget and 2-4 goals that should be about right against poor opposition at home. Against better opposition or away 5-10 attempts and 1-2 goals still with 50%+ ontarget.
ps. same thing applies to defence...far better to let the oppostion have a couple of shots on target every game than to so dominate them that your goalie has forgotten what a ball looks like when he is finally called into action after 4 or 5 games. If your 3-0 up with half an hour to go then close up shop and give your defence a workout.
