Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Position retraining questions

Is it possible to retrain a players position to 19 out of 20? (20 is 'natural', 15-19 is 'accomplished', highest I have ever trained a player to is 18, but I've seen players with positional values of 19)
Is it possible to retrain a players position and the player never 'forget' the new position (position value doesn't decrease again)?

thanks,
pob

also, what effect does it have on a player if he is 'unhappy with learning new position'?

At the moment I have nearly every player learning to play in new positions.

There's a hidden attribute 'versatility' which affects the extent to which the newly learned position decreases in effectiveness. If the player keeps the training and plays the position regularly then it should keep at a decent level.

Not too sure about this one. The only comparison I can give is my experience with training. The first time I messed with training I didn't notice that one of my players was 'unhappy with the workload'. From his performance and morale I would never have known.
In fact I left it at that level and for 4/5 years he was with me he was unhappy with training workload and it had zero effect on his performances (this was on an unpatched game so I don't know if that had anything to do with it).

To be honest I'm still not sure if this is just a cosmetic thing or whether it affects the overall measurement of happiness as shown in the profile.

One thing I would mention about versatility is that I've tracked player development using GenieScout and in alot of cases this value would increase significantly without me ever retraining or playing players out of position. This occured to players under the age of 23 and I think any player who has more than one position naturally (i.e. they begin the game with more than one position), particularly younger, this value tends to increase over time.

I honestly don't know if the match engine takes account of positional ratings/versatility or attributes. For example whether or not if you hypothetically had a striker with high tackling/positioning would he perform well in the right back position or would the match engine adjust these values in it's calculations based on positional rating.

As I've never tried much retraining and haven't seen any extensive posts on it all I can say is give it a go and see what happens

EDIT: If the player has a high versatility attribute then according to the hints and tips he is more likely to keep the position without regular appearances in that new position. Playing regularly, with the right attributes, should keep it even if versatility isn't very high.

For example I had an attacking midfielder who had high Finishing/Off the ball relative to the league I was in and I retrained him as a striker and he was an animal (top scorer in league 2 and league 1 until my bloody chairman sold him from under my nose for a paltry 800K ).

As with anything else in this game though your experience of how well it works might be completely different to mine.
