I am currently playing a game with HSV in FM 2008. One major problem I have is setting up my defense because I constantly get burned by the same move by the opposing team almost every game.
You see, what happens is one striker (let’s call him Mister A) will hold on to the ball just before entering my third of the field. One of my central defenders (Mr M) will then run towards him, and run out of position, to close him down. The other striker (Mr K) will follow this movement by running into the space behind the central defender who is closing down Mr. A. while a through ball gets played to him which results in a breakaway and, almost always, a goal.
How do I stop this from happening?
Perhaps you're defending a little too deep. If you have quick defenders, try playing with a higher defensive line with the play offside button ticked. If they do get through this way your defenders will have a better chance of catching him. Also try man marking instead of zonal marking so your spare defender will follow mr k as he runs into space instead of staying in his own zone. Hope this makes sense.
Reducing the closing down will help (though they still will close down outside of their supposed range) but the only surefire way to prevent this scoring opportunity is to play a defensive midfielder to protect your centerbacks.
The problem is that was with man marking and my defensive line is a couple of ticks left of deep, not too deep at all. My two defenders are Garay and Mathijsen. I will try to implement your suggestions. Thank you for your help.
