So there it was. Football Manager 2007 had arrived in my mail-box and I was to start at my new career; manager for the relegation favourites in Conference North; Vauxhall Motors.
2006/2007: I arrived at the club to a negative media prediction; they wrote us off even before the season had started. Media prediction: 22nd (AKA rock bottom)
I wasn´t going to let that dicourage me, so I had a look at the staff and players at my disposal, pretty awful the whole bunch, except a very athletic forward.
Started the season well, 3 wins on the trot, not conceding a single goal. But then all hell broke loose.
Losing the 6 next games and drawing two meant that we were slowly proving the media right. Awful, disastrous defending had us concede 25 goals ( yes, you read correctly, 25 goals in 8 games) and scoring only 6.
The players were totally demotivated, low condition levels...thankfully the board wasn´t breating down my neck yet...so I just told them to enjoy the games from now on.
We gave it another go and after Christmas it got a bit better.
Promoted some youth players, one of them actually managed to score a hattrick, but thats another story...
We hit form in January, scoring 12 goals in 6 matches, albeit mostly against teams in the lower part of the league table.
Unfortunatly, my athletic forward (ironically) broke his leg in February, so we were even more reduced up front.
Finished the season just above the relegation zone, 18th in my first season. Got to live with that.
Final league position: 18th
Best league position : 4th
Lowest League positon: 22nd
Highest attendance: 694
Top goalscorer: the athletic forward - scored 14 goals - also voted fans player of the year
Game of the season a 4-1 win over Gainsborough - with my youth striker scoring a hattrick.
Hope you enjoy it, and if anyone else has tried playing as Vauxhall in 07, do let me know
Since I almost fell victim to the relegation zone last time around, I thought it was about time to change some personell at my disposal.
Released 8 players from the club, my scouts finding 4 decent replacements. It mant that my squad size was down to 18 players.
Mixed start to the season, won two games 1-nil, 2 boring 0-0 draws and lost 1 away to Redditch. Totally outplayed with the score pretty much telling the whole story: 4-0 to Redditch. It goes without saying that the board was not happy with the performance, although we were in a comfortable position at the middle of the table in 11th place.
This was an okay start to the season considering that the media predicted us to relegation once again.
Halfway through the season and disaster strikes again. Both my centre-backs are injured in a tough game away to Gateshead. They are sidelined for 3 moths with a hip injury and a dislocated shoulder injury. Great.
So I promoted two youth players and got what I deserved. We lost 5 games on the trot, conceding 17 goals.
Come March, we were in 19th place just above relegation thanks to a spirited away performace against Scarborough, where they produced 15 shots on target and not a single goal. My goalkeeper was widely hailed as the hero by the media. We scored a late goal on counter-attack.
My centre-backs returned from injury and we got the season on track again. Conceding a single goal the next five games and scoring 11. It took us to 8th place and safely away from the relegation zone.
Evenually we slipped to 10th place after my midfielders scored 2 own goals in the last two games . My goalkeeper was sent off as well for hacking down a player as the last man in defence. They converted the penalty kick and we lost our two last games.
Final league position: 10th
Best league position: 8th
Lowest league position: 19th
Highest attendance: 876
Top goalscorer: My athletic forward once again: 17 goals
Game of the season: 1-0 away win against Scarborough.
