They must differentiate from each other somehow otherwise it is pointless.
There are a lot of redundant media statements you can make. Each one has a slightly different effect. What's the difference between "relishing the prospect of beating $team", and "confident your side will no trouble beating $team"? They're basically saying the same thing, but they have slightly different effects.
I'd guess that the difference between "i'm afraid it's just specualtion. i have no plans to sign $player" and "those reports are absolute rubbish. i've never even heard of $player" is that the latter is a little more unprofessional and aggressive, while the former is polite and non-insulting to the player.
Well I sort of agree with you that it wouldn't happen in a million years, the fact is Sir Alex or any other top manager would never actually say that if they were genuinely being serious.
But if they did say it and were genuinely being serious then them being senile would pretty much be the only explanation!
Anyway let's move away from that now because lets be honest it's not gonna happen IRL.
I think confident your side will have no trouble beating $team is a way of saying you can sit back and relax and win comfortably where relishing the prospect of beating $team is a away of saying you can't wait to get out there and beat them and is more of an aggressive response.
If this is the same for regarding buying players then fair enough, it probably is the most likely, but I still think the wording is wrong, something like, "Ronaldinho??? Why would I want to sign him, he wouldn't get in the reserves' would be a better and more accurate response if you wanted to insult the player and make it clear you were not going to sign him.
I agree with you that it is supposed to be a comedy response now as I see that when you make the comments it says,
"You have laughed off reports that you would like to sign Ronaldinho" I guess this is an example of the response not being quite what you meant sometimes though because as I said sometimes I say this about people I genuinely haven't ever heard of, like that David Beckham chap.
So this bring me to a newpoint, shouldn't this still have a negative effect in some way if you laugh off reports you would like to sign such a player. Surely your team might think, but he's a great player, why wouldn't we want him at the club?

I interpreted that as more of a flippant comment, not aggressive.
