I've always been disgusted with the way ratings work in game (in that they are absurd). I still am disgusted. The ammount of times I've had AWFUL players be a liability for the whole match but because the opposition didn't score from their 10+ mistakes they get an 8 for winning 5 headers. I have no idea how hard it is to program ratings so maybe this is as good as possible (if <player name> wins 75% headers+tackles, rating = 8?).

I agree with you entirely.

The key problem for me, is that the only way to achieve an 8 or higher is to score or assist a goal. This favours attacking midfielders and forwards. Defenders can play blinding matches but will only pull a 6 or 7, so unless you have a goalscoring full back (Gareth Bale) you can forget any chance of your denders averaging over a 7.

There simply isn't enough elasticity in the ratings making it harder to establish how well players really are performing

That's not true. I often get an 8 with a DC who has no assists and no goals.

Usually in the newspapers, even if a team plays well you don't get many player scoring more than 7. You very rarely see a 9 or 10.

I find the rating system is now a lot more realistic.

Take Makelele at chelsea.He used to make the team tick 2-3 yrs ago,and never got much praise.Just like he did for Madrid.I get 8's all over the pitch when my Fm team ticks.
