Here is my view on the game. I'm not a 'fan boy', nor do I buy the latest version every year (in fact the is the first FM I've actually owned myself). For me the following issues majorly impact on my enjoyment of the game:
- The fact that all versions of the game to date have a major flaw, from basic data issues and the closing down bug in the retail version, the morale bug of the beta patch/es, to the inability to score more than 1 goal most matches regardless of tactics, formations or players in the latest full patch.
- The media interaction is flawed, in particular post match comments; how often do you hear a manager IRL criticise refereeing decisions, then compare that to how many criticisms it takes to get a fine or a ban in this game. This feature is ludicrous as you can't make a proper judgement from the 2D match engine anyway!
- The (board) confidence feature doesn't work.
- Team talks are a good idea, but again don't really work. The options are very limited and it's really pot luck as far as getting a positive response from your team goes.
I realise it's incredibly difficult to make everything work in a game this complex, but this team have made some quality games in the past that achieved something close to this. There are some good features of this game, for example I really felt that changes I made had a real impact in the match engine when running the beta patch, and there are some great little touches. But for me this game doesn't reach the high standards set by previous installments, and as a result I will not buy a game from this series again on reputation alone, and will seriously consider the competition when buying a managerial game again.

I can normally score more than one goal and i have the patch, however yes there are a lot of flaws

I agree, i just generally say nothing but it is annoying
"- The (board) confidence feature doesn't work."
Agreed again to a point as its annoying when they are disappointed with throw away games at the end of the season but i suppose boards in rl dont like to lose. Also, its only the first time its on a game so its not going to be perfect

If you pay attention to morale and personality then i find the team talks can be very effective. Also if you dont overuse them they can work very well

The game is good right now and will be great after the 2nd patch.
Well ive played every single Cm/fm game to death, and would be playing every free second i had,Fm08 is hardly played, its just not enjoyable or realisitic.Ever version,i have gone out and bought the day of release, looked for previews and reviews in games mags, ive loved the series, but fm08 is pure rubbish.
- There have been flaws in the game, but your goalscoring issue is to do with other apects(tactics, players, individual instructions etc) I'm sorry if you can't score more than 1 goal, but its not a bug, its how you're playing the game.
- The media interaction isn't great. No point to it in my opinion,I just ignore it.
- I'm not a fan of the confidence feature. I think it has improved post patch, but people still seem to be getting the boot, despite having good records and keeping finances in check.
I personally hate "the main dissappointment is the signing of.............". They usually say this about a cheap player brought in as back up, not exactly a major concern for the board or fans.
- Team talks are not a lottery and take a bit of trial and error. I do feel, however, it is too easy for the opposition to play like Barnsley in 1 half and Barcelona the next, based entirely on a team talk. I actually hate being 2 or 3 up at half time, its almost a disadvantage.

Couldnt agree more with this, i dont think i have hit a teamtalk that works when 2 or 3 up, i always end up drawing, but with practice and trial and error i am confident of what to do in other situations
I was initially quite positive about FM08, thought the match engine had tons of potential and would be the best ever if the few major mistakes were removed with a patch. I was away from home for two and a half months and had no chance to try the beta patch which, judging by the response on these forums made things even worse. Now I'm back home I've actually had the chance to play the game with the real 8.0.1 patch, played about a season and have now decided to return to my 2007 save game. FM2008 in it's current state is not enjoyable. Not because it's difficult - quite the opposite, I would say it's actually a tad easier than 07. But the match engine as people have repeatedly pointed out is messed up. Watching a game on 07 gives me a feeling of watching a football match. It does, more often than it should, throw in events that do not make sense and **** me off, but on the whole it looks and feels like watching a real match. I'm constantly on the edge of my seat hoping for my team to score or the opposition to screw up. The goals scored and the passes played look realistic enough and allow me to forget that it's after all a bunch of round blobs running around on a computer screen that I'm watching.
08 on the other hand doesn't give me that feeling. I can accept screwed up passes, players making unforced mistakes, strikers messing up chances as part of the illusion, but when a midfielder suddenly stops with the ball and waits to be dispossessed, when the defenders constantly fail to pick up the most obvious of runs, when they run along the opposing striker but then suddenly stop and turn around for a second to allow the striker all the space in the world, when said striker with good stats for finishing and composure gets clean through on goal and blasts the ball straight towards the keeper and does it not once or twice but 13 times per match, it's then when I get dragged out of the illusion. And for me the illusion is what keeps me going and lets me forget all the other important things I should actually be doing instead of sitting on my arse and playing FM.
For now, I'm going back to 2007. Fully patched it's a frustrating, but quite enjoyable experience at the same time. 08 still needs major work to get even close to fulfilling it's potential. We can hope the 8.0.2 patch would make things right, but I for one ain't holding my breath. Every fix seems to pile up new serious problems so the chances they'll get it right are not that perfect.

I've tried everything to improve my goal scoring, from changing formation to changing tactics to changing personnel. I have a striker also who has 14 finishing, 17 composure (not to mention 15 pace, good dribbling, first touch, off the ball etc.) and can he score 1-on-1s in league 2? No. I loan players who are good enough to play in league 1/championship, can they score? No.
