Hi I've taken the plunge into Lower League management and have taken the helm at Crawley in the BSP.
Now in the 18 months I have managed them I have had a number of youth players reach a certain age and ask for proper contracts. Having checked them out as best I can and being on a very limited budget I have decided that every single one of them can be released as I have no use for them.
My problem is that I can't release them for free. Every single time I choose that option I am told that I will have to pay compensation varying from £3,000/£4,000 upto £10,000, why?
Surely these guys are not under a contract to me so why should I have to pay to get rid of them? I have gone into the Set transfer status screen and set them as Not Needed but I cant transfer list them either. Will I be stuck with these numpty's forever?
I'm guessing that it is me that is the numpty here and I'm just missing something obvious, so could someone enlighten me please.

i find the best thing is to give them one year contracts when they become elligable for a proffesional one, saves them from staying till they reach 19 etc.

Maybe this will help...or at least make you feel better about dragging their dead weight around.
Many of the lower teams have pre-contracts already signed at the club with the youth players before you even arrive on the scene. During your first couple of seasons, you are unable to release them without a fee, transfer list them (because it's grayed out), or make good use of them in the starting lineup.
However, when you read the message that they have automatically signed a real contract, they generally end a contract at a season's conclusion. The length of the signing seems to be determined by your assman's judgment of his potential ability. Then, when this time is up, you can release them like any other player whose contract runs out.
If you don't want to lose the money on their salaries, you can always divide those players up equally between the reserve and U18 teams (if you are still in the BSN or BSS). Then, you can schedule many friendlies with each other at 1K each. Considering that each one of the youth players gives you income via the youth grant, the additional ticket sales from the friendlies should cover the rest of their salaries at least. Most of them make 1K per year anyway. So each friendly scheduled, pays for one of their salaries for the year.

Nice idea about the friendlies, but going one further...
I'm Hyde United in my current save in the BSN. Rather than just have friendlies between your reserves & u18´s, push the boat out a little.
I managed to arrange friendly matches against Sevilla C, Barcelona C, Real Madrid C (RM Castilla) and a number of other big club's reserve and youth acadamy sides. When my youth team played RM Castilla, they generated gate receipts of 16k - seriously not to be sniffed at, as this is in effect, generating more gate receipts than my league games
So have a look around. When you select a friendly, check to see what the board estimate the gate receipts will be before you accept. It will MORE than pay the wages until you can get rid of those useless youngsters!!

the reason they have compensation is because they have signed a long deal, if you go into manager options and tick the assman off offering contracts then its down to your discretion.
You cant expect the assman to know the future plans you have for the club, and if your on the up you only want the best of the young crop
