Absolutely, although a find that a defensive mentality needs at least one forward with an attacking mentality to offer an outlet pass.
I also agree that your team benefits from a global mentality, assumingly because they are all on the same wavelength and playing as a team rather than 11 individuals. The build-up play seems a lot more crisp in my experience.
I have had good success using GM managing to get Birmingham to 5th place just 4pts off 4th spot. I always stick to GM regardless if im doing good/poor although I am a bit perplexed as to why I will keep say 5 clean sheets on the trot to then suddenly open the floodgates and start to concede 8 goals in 3 games etc.
It can, but beware. I noticed that by playing a global attacking system, my centre backs would rush forward from a goal-kick leaving me horribly exposed at the back. In all honesty, I now feel that having mentalities very close together is more effective.
In a 4-4-2
DEFENSE: First notch of defensive
MIDFIELD Normal for CM, first notch of defensive for DM, first notch of attacking for WGs
STRIKER 1: Normal mentality (sits a little deeper)
STRIKER 2: First notch of attacking
I find that the more extreme you have your mentality settings, the easier it is for the opponent to play through you.
