Your right, if you look at teams in IRL that play or did play brillant pass and move football, all the players held their positions and played simple short passes.

Getting assists from central midfielders. Post #12
Depends what you use in theat advanced/attacking CM slot... for me anyway.
Iplay as Liverpool and when I useed Luis Garcia(at home) in that, he made 2 assists and scored a goal as well. Maybe it's my tactics that was the reason, but even Alonso in that position didn't get that involed in the final third. So Hamenaglar I'm sure who your playing as?? but that works wonders for me.
oOff the top of my head, my instructions for that role are;
Menality - 16 (p.s. the whole team metality, defenders to attackers is between 12 + 16)
Creative freedom - 16
Passing - 8
Forward runs - often
Runs with ball - mixed
Through ball often - often
Long shots - mixed or ofdten (depends)
Cross ball - rarely

Getting assists from central midfielders. Post #13
The thing I tend to do, when I try and play football, champaign esque or playing the Arsenal way as it were. I tend to look for them through balls from my midfield, for my strikers to run on to, and either score or supply the wide men, whom join in on the attack.
Stylish football often requires a lot of tweaking, assists mainly about finding weaknesses and exploiting them to your strengths. This is something I have found anyway.

Getting assists from central midfielders. Post #15
Manchester United has probably one of the best winger pairs in the world. use them. play wide, play flanks. Adapt a direct passing and close up the back holes with keano's successor Hargreaves. When the opposition figures out your flank play. make them play through the middle, prefearbly through scholes as a playmaker. If you have saha, he's a god at target man. Give rooney a free role and he'll upp his performances. If he doesn't bring in some fresh legs and a profilic goalscorer. If you are struggeling against a fast team. put Defense on Deep. but not all the way to the bottom. About a pinky nail from the deepst setting. Counter attacking is also a very good setting for this team. If you have Weegie updated. Giggs will be superior to Nani for 2ish seasons. (just a reminder)

Getting assists from central midfielders. Post #16
Canabary, thanks for the advice, but I don't have any trouble winning, so far I'm half way in the season, with losing only one premiership game against Arsenal away. So I'm doing more than fine, and with the latest tweaks my team is also playing much better and more beautiful, but still, my central midfielders do not have enough ball and sure as hell are not making enough assists (carrick and scholes have together two assists). Modric has 4 assists, but most of that was made when he was playing as a winger. On the other hand, my wingers are playing brilliantly. I guess the problem might be that the opposition goes to narrow, so I'm forced to play wide through flanks. I've tried playing down both flanks and through the middle. I've tried direct and quick, short and slow, short and quick, direct and slow. Changing forward runs for half the team, free roles, etc. There is only one thing I did not and will not touch, and that is mentality. I've got my whole team on global mentality and it has done wonders in terms of making the flow of the ball more smooth and tightening my defense.
Oh, there is one thing I didn't try, that is reducing the TTB for my CM's.
P.s. I also experimented a bit with diamond 4-4-2.

If you want the CM's to get more assists then you need them to get forward more. But by doing this you will be vulnerable to quick counter attacks. Try having one of them as a player maker and play through the middle and be a bit more attacking. Then after a while the assists should come.
