Default Europe: Tactical experimentation

Over the past few months I have decided to experiment different tactics throughout leagues in Europe.

My first experiment was in Italy with AC Milan. I decided that I wanted to go against the usual Italian style of slow paced football and created a sexy football tactic. It worked bagging me all the trophies in one season. It consisted of a diamond formation and employing a target man to base my attack around. An indepth look at this can be found on my Cleansweep with AC Milan thread.

I then moved to Holland with Ajax where I used the same tactic as my AC Milan one. I did not use a target man and based the football on a fast paced attack. This suited Ajax with the fluent way of playing. So i came to the conclusion that this may be a tactic that could be employed anywhere in europe.

With this in mind I moved to Europe with West Ham. I used the same tactic and failed miserably. After finding it difficult as I have always found the EPL for some reason, I gave up.

However after the start of the new season I have decided to give it another shot with Man Utd. Reason being I wanted to create a tactic which replicates the way they play currently including the "Rooney Role" which I have never been able to implement. I used the AC Milan tactic as a basis for my defemsive and changed it to a flat 4-4-2 with farrows on the MR/L and barrows on my fullbacks. I also took some tips from Starr_Man5 on using a libero CB, however I have not given him as much freedom.

Heres the positions:

Heres the team instructions:

The mental of my team is mainly global apart from my back four which are set to 5 and my ST which is set to 17

This has resulted a more free flowing style football and after a dodgy start where I have been getting the tactic right, I am starting to string some results together.

Will keep you updated.

Any questions welcome and I will post more screenc=shots as I have not produced much in the way of how my tactic is set up, not very good at this lol.

Throughout Europe yes I do. However in the Premiership I have decided to stick with one tactic which seems to be bringing me success at the moment especially when looking at the match stats I nearly always have over 50% possession. Also I normally tweak in match according to the match stats but I have found no reson to do so so far.

I also experimented in League 2 with Bradford City. I used a more basic version of this Man Utd tactic where by I have no free roles and less freedom. In that I used the scout reports and tweaked within matches according to the match stats.

Results so far (I will start from where I "perfected" the tactic to what it is now after a 1-0 loss to Wigan, no doubt it can be made better):

(H)Birmingham 3-0 W (Possession 55%)
(H)Lazio 3-0 W (Possession 54%)
(A)Chelsea 2-1 W (Possession 51%)
(H)Liverpool 1-1 D (Possession 53%)
(H)Dinamo Buc. 3-2 D (Possession 50%)
(H)West Ham 2-0 W (Possession 56%)
(H)Preston 3-0 W (Possession 56%)

All is well at the moment but no doubt I will have to change the tactic at some point

If you look on my Cleansweep with AC Milan thread, you should find it on there.

Would be great if you post how you get on with Milan in that thread as well just so it doesn't get confusing on this thread?

Wow! someone is actually using one of my ideas..I'm honored. But didn't you know I failed miserably?
(although the Libero was a complete success, as always but you need Agger )

Lol yeah I liked the idea. However I don't use it fully as I don't have him set to a free role and less creative freedom but what I have used works nicely so thanks. Yeah Agger would be a nice addition lol

Starting to realise a few problems with the tactic which I haven't managed to sort out yet.... it isn't good away.

At home I beat teams convincingly with around 60% possession and they don't have a shot on target but away from home I get cut through like butter.

I have tried playing defensive with a deep d-line and a direct counter attack but this still does not work. The problem is in two games now I have conceded 2 goals in 2 minutes then I just can't get the ball in the back of the net.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Heres an update on my season anyway:

(A)Newcastle 0-2 L (Possession 54%) two goals in two minutes
(A)Dinamo Buc. 0-0 D (Possession 53%)
(H)Arsenal 2-1 W (Possession 52%)
(H)Southampton 2-0 W (Possession 53%, 20 shots, Soton had no shots at all)
(A)Middlesbrough 1-0 W (Possession 52%)
(H)Blackburn 2-0 W (Possession 57%)
(H)Schalke 5-0 W (Possession 54%)
(A)Bolton 2-2 D (Possession 53)
(H)Aston Villa 5-0 W (Possession 60%)
(A)Fulham 1-1 D (Possession 47%- Tevez sending off forced me to completely change tactics hence the poor possession)

As you can see I have achieved my objective of creating a tactic which keeps the possession. It's just I need to make it work away now.

Ok unless someone replies to this then I will stop posting on this thread seen as I don't want to be taken to the loony bin for talking to my self lol.

I have decided that I really need to keep hold of possession primarily so have resorted to 1 on tempo and 1 on passing style to ensure that I pass the ball around just keeping the ball and not rushing to take shots, seen as I have had such a poor SOT ratio. I also added the instruction on Rooney to swap position with Tevez which has resulted in his performances being a lot better

This has been an instant success with most home games resulting in a possession percentage of 64! Also normally winning at home by 4 or more goals and conceding 0.

I have suddenly been hampered by a lot of injuries but have decided not to change my tactics.

If anyone is interested in this thread please post if not I will let it die
