Hi guys and gals. Please help! I have been playing Champ Man / Football Manager for about 10 years and never, ever do well! No matter which team I am, which players I buy or what tactics I employ, I always suck. I have only ever succeeded with Celtic but even then I could never do well in Europe. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to pay specific attention to my tactics and change them for each game? Admittedly I tend to just pick a team and a captain, draw a few lines on the 'first 11' page and watch the game on Very Fast. Is this where I'm going wrong? Does rigorously tweaking tactics really make a significant difference? Yours, a VERY FRUSTRATED lover of the game.
To be honest, you can't go alot wrong with the default tactics. Pick 4-4-2, ensure morale is decent amongst your players and away you go.
You can tinker with your tactics to get more pleasing results and to make players come into the game a little (Eddie Johnson, for example, I find near useless in the 4-4-2 unless you tweak it so he's the target man), but then you also risk ballsing it up.
You don't have to rigorously change but you do have to put effort into the game - it's very rewarding when things work out.
Read everything by Leroy1883 for football tactical basics, then read things by Cleon, wwfan and rashidi to see how these apply in FM (more thouroughly). Take it all onboard, see which bits suit you (how much time you have, what team/style you want etc). It's a fair bit of reading admitedly, and this game's flaw is that such work has to be put it, but read it as you play and eventually you get there. We've all been there.
