I am all ears since I am of the belief that the settings must be there for a reason. Why don't you do an experiment in the same manner as I did? Have all settings set to a minimum (extreme left) and tinker with only the opposition instructions and post screenshots of it in action. This is the ONLY way we can truly know what they the OIs at the most basic level. I would gladly help out if you wanted to do it.
Example Experiment 1
Man Utd V Chelsea
All settings left for both teams, except:
Didier Drogba man marked always
Experiment 2
Man Utd V Chelsea
All settings left for both teams, except:
Didier Drogba closed down always
Experiment 3
Man Utd V Chelsea
All settings left for both teams, except:
Didier Drogba man marked always and closed down always
Experiment 4
Man Utd V Chelsea
All settings left for both teams, except:
Didier Drogba never man marked...
You get the picture, but this could be a very constructive experiment and since I am sure these instructions will be available for 08, it would be a nice way to improve our tactics ever so slightly for the next incarnation.
Arteta that would be great. I am away this weekend and won't be back until Tuesday, so if you want to start I can pick up next week. I'm sure if we work togther than we will get at least some idea of how it's supposed to work. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Sounds good fella. I'm not sure how much time I'll have this weekend either, but in the meantime we can come up with some factors to take into consideration. What teams should we use for example? Would it be better if we try it with top class markers so we can see it succeed. Should we use useless markers so we can see it fail?
These types of things are important I think...

I would do it with top class markers who lack pace a bit (Terry vs Henry? or something similar). I believe in this case the difference should be more apparent. I tend to apply opposition instruction only to players who impose a serious danger. I do not see a point to apply it to realtively weak players as I believe my defs are good enough to take care of them without specific instructions. And if you use useless markers against top STs, you don't know if your opposition instruction fails or you DC tries to do what he is asked but cannot do it properly.

It is absoloutely pathetic that even amongst what you would generally consider to be the more adept and knowledgeable side of the FM07 userbase (as opposed to those who just buy the game and play without any great foray into the deep tactical side of things) there is still such a lack of understanding as to quite what any of the team instructions do.
It seems to be more a case of trying to trick the AI into doing roughly what you want, by doing something different. This is how to achieve success, it has seemingly got very little to do with your real life tactical nouse, which one would assume is the general point of the game.
Poor show. Even after all this time since release there is still such widespread confusion as to what on earth anything does and how it effects your teams play. I stopped playing the game having become disillusioned with it all just before christmas and have recently been having another bash at it, but Im honestly astounded at the lack of progress. Poor show.
This is of course if tactics matter at all.. who needs tactics when you can yell your team into world beaters at half time?

Unfortunately, these are my sentiments exactly. It's a real shame.
