Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Gainsborough Revalation

Im currently managing Gainsborough and lost a lot of matches. Currently sittin' 18th in league and just trying a new formation/tactic.

The 442 and 433 didnt work for me so now I am playin' 1-3-2-3-1

Defensive line:
1 SW and 3 DC's
Midfield line:
3 MC's and 2 FULLBACKS
Offensive:
1 FC

** Decided to play a SW seeing my defenders lack pace. Im training them on it and they all got green arrows seeing i got great coaches and made my own training. So soon I wont need the SW anymore and can change him to a DM (away matches) and AMC (home).

At home I play:
Mentality: 2 up (Offensive)
Creative: Mixed
Pass: Direct (2 up)
Width: 2 back (narrow)
Closing down: Often (5 up)
Def. Line: Push (5 up)
Tackling: Hard.

Now testing this for first time. Hopefully it'll improve my perfomance

Well.. 0-0. Again.

Not creating a lot of chances. But about 3-4 shots on goal. Striker misses a lot of open chances aswell.

But defense were rock solid. So its still 1 points in the bag. Decent ratings too. All 7's with two 6's for a midfielder and my striker.

Don't use hard tackling unless you want to give lots of freekicks away and get bookings. Hard tackling is for skilled players only imo, you might want to try easy/normal and you should immediatley see a drastic increase in the tackles you will win.

For a formation like you are playing you might want to not play narrow, just play a normal game as playing narrow limits the space you have to create chances and play in.

Do you use any individual instructions at all?

What tempo are you using? I find direct passing works best with a fast tempo and a mentality the first notch of normal. Also add counter attack on this and it works a treat.

I'm guessing because you are 18th in the league, you might do better playing less attacking to begin with and more on the counter attack, because teams should be coming at you attacking, so it makes sense to try and counter them. This should increase the amount of chances you create.

Do you have all the team close down often? If so this could and its only a could mind, make players be out of position a lot.

Any chance that you can post a few screenshots of the stats of a few games?

What are your players strength? Do you have someone who could hold the ball up, uptop?

Also swapping and changing formations constantly as a negative effect on the players and they never settle down and suit a formation. So your tactic could be fine, they might just need time to settle down and get used to it.

Changing tactics mid game or at end of games to put pressure on the opposition is fine, but changing the actually shape game by game is a bad idea imo.

I just put the MC's on closing down and the defenders slightly more. I play Mixed tempo and dunno if any of my players can hold up ball up front seeing I dont know what stats to look for.

My striker has good finishing, determination, flair and off the ball if pretty decent too.

Defenders are great. High tackling, some got marking good too. I dont give away a lot now and defense seems rock solid. Now testing my first away match on counter.

Another draw.. 3-3 in the 93th minute They scored again from a cross. They keep crossing from all over the pitch and my defenders miss them all causing their striker to go 1on1 with my goalie. Darn this game is frustrating.
