Right first of all, how do you want the tactic to play? Then once you decide that its easier to find instructions that suit.
You only want to tell people to run with the ball and cross if they are good at dribbling and crossing.
By looking at players profiles for a few mins you can normally get a good of picture of what they can and cannot. If you look in the West Ham thread and look at the instructions I used. I choose them because I wanted to play as a unit, thats why most of the mentalies etc are all very simliar so we play as a tight group.
ok i see, well i normally play with 2 small strikers so i want the wingers to cross the ball but i have 2 midgets in the box so it seems like a waste...?
i'd like to dominate games, i chose short & fast because i like the style of play a la arsenal, i understand quite a lot of the tactics but some things like creative freedom delude me, (for gk & defenders) so what would you do if you was in lower leagues with bad players (referring to the stats thing) would you tell them not to cross the ball and keep things simple or...?
If you play 2 small strikers who are not good in the air, then its pointless having people cross to them as most of the time they won't even win the header.
If you want to dominate possession you need to play slow/normal tempo to retain the ball. Playing a fast tempo game makes your players more prone to giving possession away cheaply.
If you are a decent side in the league you are in and have decent players compared to everyone else then go and attack teams. If you are a weak side in your league then you want to play a counter attacking game.
Even though you are in a poor league the rest of the players in that league are poor as well, you need to remember that. So just because a player as a weak stat for crossing, it might not actually be that bad for the league you are playing in.
My basic rule in a lower league is to hoof it!! The scientific approach seems to work :-)
What I do find is that a tactic doesn't work well all season. For example I had a tactic that I made myself using advice from this Forum. I used it as Leeds after promotion to The Championship, I was expected to finish mid-table however by the end of Jan I was in 1st place 14 points ahead of the 3rd place team. I had conceded less than anyone else and scored only 3 less than the highest scorers. This is in contrast to the previous season where I won promotion from League One via the Playoffs, despite conceding more than anyone else apart from the relegated teams. However since Jan I have won one game and are conceding 2 or 3 a game. I am now in March!! And promotion is no longer assured!! It seems that the other teams have worked me out!! So I guess the trick is to recogise when things stop working
Also, the tempo you mentioned should be directly related to the passing, no point playing a quick tempo with a short passing game. Quick tempo works well with Long Ball or Direct. I also find a good tactic for lower league is to have a striker who is tall and good in the air linked to a fast small striker. Use the Target Man option and have them lump the ball up to him. I used this as Leeds in League One with Flo as target man and Beckford running to his flick ons. Beckford scored 36 goals!
please bugger off neil this isn't for general use!
just joking matey thanks for the advice when i eventually go back to playing as newcastle i'll use yours and cleons advice, do either of you have any dead certainties for a team like newcastle?
there are quite a few things i always do like high closing down for attacking players with easy tackling to keep them on their feet and act as a wall. would that be a good idea?
p.s. the start bit was a joke mate i don't do serious too much but seriously (get it ) it was a joke, thanks for the contribution
Cleon, would you be able to sorta give a list of things to tweak in-game and when to do them? i want to become better at this game and your help would be appreciated! An obvious example would be if your strikers are lashing at everything then your tempo is too high, things like that.
tbh it hasn't helped an awful lot i learned a bit about how to play against counter attacking teams but not an awful lot, thanks anyway, any other ideas mate?
