Default From Russia With Not A Lot

First LLM attempt on FM07, only using a normal database but with all leagues running from Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine. Frank sends me off to SKA-Energia Khabarovsk, who happen to be the eastern-most club in the league and play at the V.I. Lenin Stadium 5000km from Moscow. Ideal for away games then…

Season 2006 - SKA-Khabarovsk – Russian First Division

Expected to finish 12th of 22 which sounded reasonable, given a whole 70k to spend. First half of the season saw a surge to the top of the league, but the absence of a consistent goalscorer and the sale of a Russian U19 DC for 300k saw us fade away in the last 10 games, following a 16-game unbeaten run with a 7 match winless streak. Secured a nice new contract and a bit more cash, turned a nice profit and managed to acquire a few youngsters from around Russia. Oh, and my Youth Coach is wanted by all the Moscow clubs yet keeps turning them down. Feeder clubs appear commonplace in Russia and I acquired Latvia’s Valmiera over the course of the campaign.

League: 4th - P42 W19 D12 L11 GF50 GA35 GD15 PTS69
Cup: Lost on pens to Amkar in Sixth Round (not impressive, entered in Fifth!)
Transfers: 14 in for 140k, 7 out for 400k

Russian Premiership: CSKA Moscow
Russian Cup: CSKA Moscow

Season 2007 - SKA-Khabarovsk – Russian First Division

6th place finish predicted this time round, whereas I wanted to push on for promotion. New Brazilian SC found form and bagged 11 despite long-term injury, as did my other striker. Star player proved to be an aging MC with a knack for free-kicks, but once again inconsistency let us down – back to back runs of 3 wins, 4 losses, 5 wins, 3 losses, 9 unbeaten then only 3 points from the last 5 games saw us slip away down to a disappointed finish, 12 points off the top two. My scout is still stuck in Eastern Europe, but we now have ‘exceptional knowledge of the area.’ Grabbed a second feeder club in FC Kharkiv of Ukraine, and was passed over for the Rubin job.

League: 5th – P42 W23 D5 L14 GF68 GA42 GD+26 PTS74
Cup: Out in Sixth Round to Amkar again, 3-1 this time
Transfers: 6 in for 240k, 5 out for 110k

Russian Premiership: Saturn
Russian Cup: CSKA Moscow
Champions League: Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona
UEFA Cup: Valencia 3-1 Sevilla

Season 2008 - SKA-Khabarovsk – Russian First Division

This time I feel we have a shot at the big time, but I’m quickly proved wrong by only 11 points from the opening 8 games. By half-way I’m within a couple of points of the top spot, and with 6 games to go a promotion slot is mine. However, a ridiculous run-in saw us play 5 of the top 8, and we ended up missing out on the final day. Serious decision-making followed, but I decided to give it another go and signed a one-year extension. Plusses came from the form of freebie Russian SC, bagging 18 for the year, emergence of a new CB and the eventually signing of another AMC. On the down-side, both my first-choice wingers suffered major injuries, my AML still having 4 months out.

League: 3rd – P42 W21 D9 L12 GF56 GA40 GD+16 PTS72
Cup: Sixth Round again, 4-1 on aggregate to arch-rivals Luch
Transfers: 9 in for 325k, 11 out for 350k

Russian Premiership: CSKA Moscow
Russian Cup: CSKA Moscow
Champions League: Real Madrid 3-0 Barcelona (hmm…)
UEFA Cup: AC Milan 2-0 Athletico Madrid
European Championships: England 1-0 Turkey

I would say that this is pretty good success. It's really difficult to play in the Russian First Division, especially if you're one of the clubs favored for relegation at the outset.

The weather for the far eastern clubs like SKA and Metallurg Krasnoyarsk can be brutal too, particularly at the start and end of the season. Frozen pitches, freezing temperatures and winds can really fatigue your players. Injuries can be frequent and serious. But I love seeing the snow and the orange ball on the 2D pitch.

Good struggle so far! Promotion looks like a good possibility next season, though, so keep on it!

I see what you mean about that, Krasnoyarsk have yo-yoed every year, and just about a quarter (if not more) of my games are on snow. Still, it doesn't seem to get to my team too much, even if away games are half way around the world!
