I have every release of this football manager ever since it came out on the Amiga as Championship Manager in the old days. I just like the latest version and it gets better and better. But why is the game so hard to get anywhere with. I started of the latest version with Alfreton in the lower conference. With the players I have I managed to please the chairman by not getting relegated and finished 16th in the first season but I am about 200K in the red. The goalkeeper I had on loan from forest has now gone back and I have not been able to get him on loan again this season. In fact it is very hard to get anybody to come. So at the start of the second season my first friendly against Doncaster and got hammered 13 - 1. In fact I have not even drawn a game yet this season let alone won one. What am I doing wrong. What do you look for in searching for a player, I use the standard training but they don't seem to improve. How do you mark a certain opposition player with your strong defender. ie man to man marking. How do you filter out players who are interested in to come to your team as against those who don't. Why do forwards when they have got past the last defender always run to the side instead of shooting. I used to enjoy playing the earlier versions 00/01 being my favourite but now it is so hard and frustrating. Hell knows how hard it would be if I managed a Premier side. Any good tips please. I don't need a list of the best players to get I just need to know how to work out how to get them and train them up. Help.

At the risk of incurring the jockmodbloke's wrath, I'll try to help with what I think is an interface issue.
Once you have a shortlist of players, you can filter them by ticking the 'Ask Assistant Manager To Filter Unrealistic Targets' option.
In fact, when your scouts give you reports on players, they should indicate whether or not that player would be interested in joining you. And since scouts should be how you find pretty much all your players, I would imagine that you should have an idea anyway.
Scouts are perls at best. Mine recommended numerous players that would be keen to join us, only to find out they don't want to join us. On the other hand, he found several not going to join us that were keen on coming.
This is exactly one of the problems that I get. Scouts giving wrong information. I picked up one player the scout gave a 4 star for and said he was excellent only to get the player and he only getting 4 or 5 rating in a match, he was in his strongest position but just played crap. Is Alfreton a bad team or what. Although I just managed to avoid relegation in the first season, It looks like I will end up bottom with virtually no points in the second season.???
razzleman, here's why you can't use the player list.
In real life, managers don't have a magic list they can look over that tells them which players may or may not be interested in playing for them. They don't have a list that tells them a certain player can possibly play in a number of different positions. They don't have a list that shows how a player would rate out of 20 in heading ability.
Need any additional clarification? I'd be happy to list more if need be.
Ok so managers don't have a magic list of who knows what players will play for you. But I havn't got 24 a day to play this game. Maybe if there was a lite version of the game released without all the finite detail you have to sort out. After all it is only a computer game when all said and done, and very well done it is. It would probably take me a whole year just to play one season if I spent so much time analysing every detail. I may as well become a real manager and get paid for it, (ha ha).
Another question : on the players screen, when I have set up the team. I like to have the players list in order which I do by clicking in the top of the column, but when I go to do something different and come back to the player list it is all jumbled up. Is there a way of locking this in order.
And how can I man mark one special oppenent, say their Joe Bloggs with my Bill Hackem for eg. The only thing I can find is either zonal or man marking with a tick for tight marking as well. But not my no4 tight marking their number 9. ??.
I have now lost 4 games 13-1, 7-1, 6-1 and 6-0.
Is this game hard or what
