Doesn't it embarrass you even ever so slightly when you see users like Kostis, Ollie and the like who post in perfect English, to the extent of being able to use English slang, when some natural English speakers are too lazy or ignorant to do the same?

Because there are foreign people reading these forums. If you type in text-speak and/or are careless with your grammar and spelling you make it infinitely harder for these guys to understand what you're saying.
After all, a lot of people have busted their asses to learn your stupid language, you might as well make an effort and not rely on people getting the 'gist' of what you're trying to say, but actually say it. Not that much to ask, is it?

Neil; the reasons for the pedantic spelling are:
1. Many users of this particular forum do not have English as their first language;
2. LLaMas generally are pedantic arses, that's why they're so much fun.
HTH.

Like wewak and Kostis said - it has to do with respecting each other. The point of posting here is that you want others to reply. And they obviously can only reply well if they understand what you are trying to say. So why make it hard for others understanding you? Why be so reckless and careless not to care for spelling or the choice of words?
For the same reason you usually get asked to remove your chewing gum before talking to your teacher - at least it was that way at the school I attended. It's not that teachers or others would not want you to enjoy the delicious taste of your chewing gum. It just makes talking really hard.
Of course, with Australians and Texans, removing chewing gum doesn't help. It's firmly attached into their souls it seems. |

If you have read through all my posts in this thread you will see I have not once used text speak. I can also say that there isn't much wrong with my grammer compared to some of the other crap I've seen in this forum.
And seamus I believe typing has surely got to be worse than speeling something wrong, how the **** does someone from overseas know what thats meant to mean, surely thats some kind of text speak.
Kfoolmoon what makes you think I dont make an effort with my spelling, as you seem to have followed what ive been saying.
Iajafer, where in this thread have I said that English is my first language. If you read the posts as thoroughly as you check your spelling you will have noticed that I might not be English afterall.

Typing 'of' instead of 'have' is normally a British-only idiom.

Because when you've seen as many posts as I have in fora all over the web you instantly recognise the difference between a foreign guy struggling with the language and an English native who just doesn't give a damn.
You trying to say you're not a native English speaker?

a.) Neil Hartley doesn't sound like a name from a Non-English-speaking-country.
b.) When I assumed, you were a native speaker, I asked you to correct me if I was wrong. You didn't correct me, so I think it is right to assume that my assumption was correct. I hope you can follow.
c.) Usually, foreigners try hard to give their best when writing in a foreign language. People who don't give a damn, even after being corrected a couple of times, are usually native speakers who don't give a damn. Simple theory. |
