I would say that it's the manner of own goals that is the problem, rather than the volume. Three - four times a season one of my full-backs will send a 25-yard backpass past my static keeper. I don't think i've seen an own goal yet where a defender has inadvertently turned in a cross or headed past their own keeper.
The game now correctly allocates own goals based on whether the ball was going in before it took a deflection from the defender.
In previous versions, those would have been given to the attacking player, now they go against the defender. So there are more own goals. The moronic ones tend to stick in the mind longer, though.
Had a season with Eastleigh where two of my players were competing for the top scorer by doing own goals. They managed to scored 9 goals in total with other players trying to get in on the fun but only scoring a few. I think I had a total of about 15 own goals that season.

Personally, I have seen the opposite. Most own goals my lot concede are where the defender inadvertently turns the ball in from inside the 6 yard box.
