Eastleigh Season 06/07

The horror, the horror.

Started the game unemployed and set the settings so I could only get a job in the English Conference South/North. Took 10 days and I was offered a job at Eastleigh. I accepted and had a look at the squad. The squad had a very nice attacking option but no one knew how to defend, not even the defenders (not that they knew how to attack). I also felt I had the worst selection of goalkeepers you could imagine.

I sent my scouts away and they quickly bombarded me with players, all whom had no interest in joining my puny side. I ended up getting only 1 player on loan, a 37 year old goalkeeper. (He was actually younger than the one I was going to use).

Season started out sharply with me winning 5 out of the first 6 games and drawing one. My strikers were also having the time of their life netting like insane. My goalkeeper started out in the same way, allowing the opposition to net like insane. My central defender and my left back also joined in on the fun of scoring but didn't which goal to attack. They managed to score 4 own goals in the first 10 games. They carried on out the season with my left back leading 5-4 in goals.

The form of my team gradually began to slip and by Christmas I was 6th and with hope that if I had a decent run in the second half of the season I would be go to the play-off. Man did that fail.

During Christmas my strikers decided it was time to stop scoring and for the next 3 months my team scored a total of 9 goals (compared to the 50 they did before Christmas) and I only won 2 games out of 19. This got me down to the 20th position. At that point I thought my time was over with this team and I resigned. The team ended 17th in the end.

I then ended the season looking for a new job.

Bayonne Season 07/08

June 2007 I got offered a short term job for Bayonne in France. My mission was to save the team from relegation and the odds of 300-1 told me I had a mountain to climb. I started by placing 4 ads in the job centre, a coach ad, a scout ad, a physio ad and an assistant manager ad. My current staff was a gk coach and a youth coach so I needed my new staff as quick as possible. Pre-season preparations were going well but the season start didn’t. Had an away game against Paris Est. and got thrashed 4-1. It took new players and tweaking in the tactics that ended up with a kick and run tactic to turn things around. With two games left of the season I had gotten enough points stay clear of relegation and end 13th in the division. A good season was over.

Got a few good players this year, an eccentric goalkeeper, a veteran winger, a veteran defender and two strong strikers.

Finances are doing okay. Losing about 10k per month but well below my wage budget and after dropping a few reserve players, I’m hoping this will hold it steady at were it is now, at +20k.

Only had one cup fixture this year when I lost to a CFA-B side.

Bayonne 2008/2009

So having reached my target I was offered a new 2 year deal for 130 pounds per week. One lousy pay seeing as everyone on my first team has a higher pay. Media thought we had a better chance of staying clear of relegation but still 100-1. They also predicted that we would end 18th instead of rock bottom.

With my two new signings I was feeling very confident and thought it was time to try a more aggressive tactic after drawing the 3 first games and only conceding one goal. This started out well but after a few games my form dropped and I had a run of 8 games without a win. I then changed back to my old tactic and things started going better. The team held steady in mid-table for most of the season and I ended 11th with 51 points. However the board was disappointed with the teams performance (again, they also were last season) although they wanted me to battle relegation bravely. My team was then named the season’s overachievers in the season summary.

I won one game in the cup against a CFA-B squad before losing against another CFA side.

I had a few key signings this season with mostly young players and with a handful of promising players in my youth squad (one of them was the highest scoring player in the u18s) I hope that I’ll soon challenge for promotion. I at least have the potential with the very young squad I have.

Finances were starting to brighten up with an average of 10k in profit each month.

Bayonne 2009/2010

The bookies were getting more and more on my side and with the odds at 40-1 I was hoping for a respectable position in the league.

I decided to stay calm in the transfer market this season only getting one 18 year old DC. I now had a very young and good squad and I could easily play a very strong side with the oldest player being 23. During pre-season matches I lost two key players to injuries and they missed the start of the season.

I changed to an aggressive tactic in the start and things were going really well. I was second when Christmas came and things were looking good. I had been losing key players to injuries on regular basis but never more than 1 at a time so everything was okay. I even lost my goalkeeper for 2 months. My 17 year old striker was outstanding and scored 25 goals in 28 games but then he went mad and headbutted another player. That moment of madness got him a 6 game ban and he even had the nerve to be unhappy when I warned him for violent behavior.

I had a bad spell were I scored fewer goals that usual with my main striker banned. In the end I struggled to hold on to the 3rd place and ended 2 points ahead of the 4th team. My now 18 year old striker was second in goals scored in the division and was selected the most promising player in the league, with my amc ending second. I was then third in the selection for manager of the year, just behind the two managers that were 1st and 2nd in the league. They both were managing recently relegated teams so I thought the selection was bogus. My team got awarded for being overachievers this season and my 18 year old DC was the signing of the season and was at the same time attracting big teams who wanted to buy him.

I got one more round in the Cup before losing 3-2 to Lens after leading 2-0 at half-time. I am gaining one round per season, so I should win the cup in 2016.

Bayonne 2010/2011

Things were looking good. Club went fully professional. The club however thought that wages for a professional club were approximately the same for a semi-pro club and a professional club. So they only gave me 5 000 pound increase in salary which I doubled after giving my players professional contracts. And then, to make things even better, my chairman decided to accept a 1.3 million pounds offer for my young DC. I was furious. I sent my scouts out in a rush to find another DC and was close on various occasions but didn’t find one. I did however find a world class striker, although he is a bit old. Nancy then decided they wanted my assistant manager and I started looking for a new one.

The odds then came in and 150-1 didn’t look good although I was confident that I had a squad capable of staying up, although a bit thin in defense.

Things were pretty steady throughout the season and I managed to end 11th with 51 points. My team was selected as the overachievers for the 3rd year in a row and my signing of the world class striker was the second best signing of the year. The transfer of my young DC was then selected the worst of the season, much to my amusement. My goalkeeper and my world class striker were then awarded various awards for the season. The board was however unhappy with the team.

At the end of the season, my board announced my stadium would be expanded by 10.000 seats and my training facilities would be improved. This would be done with a 4.8 million pound loan that would take 15 years to pay.

I also find it really nice to play in the French leagues, loads of young talents and quite unpredictable seasons.
