Euro 2008

I downloaded FM08 initially and managed England but even though I qualified for Euro 08 I was not in the competition. Instead Northern Ireland won it (which is great for me as i'm a Norn Iron fella) against Belarus in the final, actually every team in the competition had not qualified and the biggest team in it were Norn Iron!

I have since bought the game and just wondered if this has happened to anyone else or if I can avoid it with the patch?

It's a deliberate anti-piracy "bug". Appears if you have a pirate copy of the game, or if you continue playing the Demo.

When you say you downloaded it do you mean you downloaded a dodgey copy?

This is a known issue with pirated games.

as for my legit copy owen scored a hatrick against greece and we stuffed the germans in quartre finals

Oh dear that must be a bug as well, it would have to be a dodgy copy for that to happen. :p
