I downloaded a great formation from this forum for Football Manager 2005, unfortunantly, the formation was on my old hard drive that got fried so I can't get any details from it.
I've looked for a formation similar to it for Football Manager 2007 but can't find anything like it.
The tactic was a solid 4-1-4-1 formation, it had the four accross the back and the defensive midfielder infront of it, then the four midfielders across the middle had arrows going forward one step and the lone striker.
My attempts to copy the formation into FM2007 have failed, I know the defensive midfielder would also go for loose balls when cleared from the oppositions box but I can't seem to get this to happen in FM2007. I also know that the left midfielder postion was a deadly position, the player playing there was deadly with goals and assists, as for the lone striker, they had a free role and whenever an attack came down a wing, he would come accross to offer an option down the line and the four midfielders would all run into the box and there was always an option for a cross and someone would be in there.
I liked this formation because he played great football, opened teams up while not letting my defense open up with the defensive midfielder covering the defense.
I could easly change it to a 4-4-2 if I needed to get a goal and because of the record I had in FM2005, I was looking for the formation again but no luck.
no but some ways to help you maybe duplicate it again:
Try distributing your ball down the flank your star winger is on, giving him often forward runs.
If he is good enough you could make him your playmaker.
Does your lone striker have good heading? If so your could ask your winger (s) to aim for his head.
You could try farrowing your two central midfielders into the FC area (though I have never tried this and don't know how sucessful it may or may not be).
I may try that, I also know that the lone striker would get fatigue by half time alot and always had to be subsituted, all the things I've tried have produced different results.
Who made the tactic your on about? Can you remember? Its just when you mentioned it was deadly down the left a light switch came on in my head and I can remember something simliar.
I imagine recreating something simliar to this on FM wouldn't be too hard depending on which team you plan to use this with.
Your striker wouldn't get fatigue if he has good stamina and natural fitness, he'd be perfectly fine for most of the season if he stayed fit. But it would rely heavily on the striker so you'd have to pick the player very well and not just settle for anyone. He'd need the right stats for how you want to play.
Can't remember who made it, all I can remember was that the tactic was out within the first month of FM2005 being released.
When I used it in FM2005, I started out with a conference side, moved to a Championship side and then moved to Inter, who brought Cristiano Ronaldo and he was deadly on the left but in another game, I put in someone that got brought up through the youth ranks and they were just as good as Ronaldo.
