theres only 1 way to play in the prem if your not a top team and thats a 4-5-1 counter attacking system! its been coded into the engine and is likely the best way to succeed!

i remember when the game first came out i thought to myself how teams were successful last year and it was when they played 4-5-1 counter!

not saying its the only way, but its the best way in the prem! ask cleon!

However I agree that counter attacking is the best option outside the top3.

ok! well theres something been implemented that makes a 4-5-1 better in the prem! even if youve got a good squad like spurs or west ham!

Nothing like that gets coded into the game. The reason its so effective is due to the bodies in the middle of the park, you out crowd most opposition and as you'll noticed on the game the midfield battle is very important.

fair enough! but why can i play 'my way' in every other country ive tried with great success! but when it comes to the prem i have to change?

I play 4-1-2-1-2 (4-4-2 diamond) and don't have any serious problem neither in EPL nor in Italy. I think it's more about tactic-players-style combination than about formation.

Because the Premiership is different from most leagues and played at a greater pace. Also the Premiership tend to play simliar formations like 442, 451 etc. But on the continent you get teams who use sweepers, wingbacks and so on.

Just like you, I used to be really good at all of the earlier versions of FM/CM. But since FM2007 I've been losing relentlessly.

I then decided to forget everything I (thought) I knew about tactics, and remembered reading a post once from someone who couldn't believe that they were having no success despite thinking a lot about the game.

Their friend, however, had never played FM or CM before, had no interest in,or knowledge of, football, and was making seemingly ridiculous tactical and player selection choices, and enjoyed a lot of success.

So I decided to use a 4-4-2 formation, with every single slider on the team instructions screen set on medium. Mentality, closing down, defensive line, EVERYTHING. I only give certain players individual instructions (crossing often for wingers, obvious stuff). I haven't played that way for very long, but my team instantly started to play much better.

I think the more complicated you try to make a tactic, the more risk you run of getting it catastrophically wrong.
