i think it is so much more fun to play with your own tactic.
i have never played 4-4-2 formation and the game for 5 years now.
i think everyone can become succesfull it just needs time.

I came here looking for help and hints. Primarily because I couldn't understand what most tactic sliders actually do and to what effect. Call it a lack of documentation.

Reading these forums definitely cleared up a lot. Sure, you can get experience by your own trial and error, but you can save a lot of time if you learn from others' mistakes. Indeed, there doesn't seem to be a single win-every-game strategy just because the game engine uses fuzzy math (if you know what I mean) a lot. Any given match can yield any result in a wide range if you play it a dozen of times in watch-only mode, because too many real-time variables affect the match flow, events and the result itself. So it's damn near impossible to download someone's tactic, apply it to your team without making any adjustments and automatically win everything. It's much, much more complicated than that.

What seems the most useful idea around these forums is to learn general tips, develop a better understanding of the engine, so that you know what is actually happening with your team and why. You have to know what you're doing well enough, rather than blindly move sliders left and right in the futile hope that it will work out right.

Right, I apologise if I am saying the same things that have been said. But my hangover is very much iminante and I was far to lazy to read anything other than the opening post.

For me, I like to make real life styles of play, and for this I look at different managers and how they play the game. So take elements from Barcelona, Chelsea and incorporate it in to my own. Hence the reason searching down forums for days to find the best tactic/player is never a healthy or wise option. For me, I believe its something you grow out of, and as you mature as a manger you learn to be a little more independent, for one of a better word.

There is no satisfaction in using other peoples tactics for me, unless you are using it to test and give people feedback. Apart from that, like anything in life, if your own stuff works out, the smell of success, is oh so much sweeter.

I have just spent a good 25 min reading and enjoying all of the above from sad but true fellow cm/fm gamers.

ref how you play the game, i have developed from a causal gamer all those years ago with my same 4 3 1 2 formation on the amiga, but it all became apparent how "dependant2 i was on the game when the new version (think it was 96ish) came out on pc and not amiga - i went straight out got a student loan and bought a pc - i new i had problems then.

i dont choose favourite teams or teams with your favourite players (because you can never sign then) i choose challenges, and depending on that team and its resources both finacially and their squad, i design a formation to suit.

you look at the good players forum and you see the same questions recommending generally the same players - you look at the most successful managers in the world and in general it is they who build mold and create a team of players tactics but with their ethos their personna about them - thats what i now strive to build - all team members would die for each other and have each other as favourite personnel, even though i am now in season 7 with a rediculaus 32 days play (i run reserves and youth team) i can't let it go. the fact that all, yes all my team worked its way though my reserve set up to my first team and we are now a top six team in euorpe and have even won the fa cup - thats buidling a legacy!

Ok, you've convinced me. I'll give one last chance at creating my own tactics. I used to, and did very well in the game for years, but over the last 3 years have found the game become nearly impossible.

There are too many options for me, and I don't know what most of them mean (despite looking).

I shall end my current game, pick a lower tier team and have a good go at it.

(I won't delete my current save game though )

I came on here after first playing FM07 looking for some tactic help but wanted to get some ideas and implement them into my own tactics.

And this has worked well for me. After looking through a few tactics I decided I liked the way Fuss' tactic looked so took that as a base and just kept tweaking it and tweaking it until it finally worked for me. Now after many seasons I've had great success with that tactic that I developed over time.

However, from doing the West Ham challenge I've found that you really can't just take a tactic that's worked for you in the past and use it for any team with success. I tried my normally successful tactics with West Ham and found myself in 19th place with a third of the season gone. So I had to use what I learned on here to change my tactics to something that worked for the players I had.

So I think it's great to get ideas on here but you only really understand the game by implementing and changing things yourself. Even if you lose it's all part of the learning.

I think everyone made very good points, you can't just load a tactic and hope it's succesfull.

Personally I only started seriously following football a couple years ago and being the technical type I was drawn to the tactical side of it. I tried other manager games but FM seemed by far the most in-depth (and hard!) of them and finally after 4 reinstalls (kept getting frustrated) I am finally getting the hang of it.

I think two of the biggest problems for someone new to FM is figuring out how you want your team to play and especially how to get it to play like that. The sliders and buttons and stuff are a bit overwhelming especially since some of them are ambiguous. Also, reading guides is fine but in the end you have to make a tactic for your team and adapt it to your players.

For me it a bit more of a challenge since alot of the advice is general or geared toward English style of play and I wanted to play with Marseille, my favourite club. I finally succeeded in creating some relatively good tactics after replaying matches over and over and making small changes and observing the results but also after getting some "continental" style tactics and looking at how the team was set up as several guides seemed to contradict for me about how to set up a continental short passing team.

Also important is to start simple and mostly use the team sliders and gradually experiment with setting individual player sliders to suit the player or enhance play (was glad when I finally got Ribery to dribble 3 opponents and deliver a decisive cross ). I think of all the guides here Slider Apathy by Asmodeus contains the best idea for someone still seeking success as it uses team sliders alot.

Now if I could just figure out how I want to set up my strikers...

(yay my first post )

I notice some things amongst those who have consistently found success in this game.

1. They realise the importance of morale and use media and teamtalks as much as possible to get the best results

2. They adapt their tactics to the matches they play. I notice 2 breeds of players here, the first actually have a stable of tactics and divide teams into three groups : Teams similar, inferior and superior. Another bunch of players make minor changes to tactics, but these changes can have big impacts on games, such as width and defensive line changes.

I don't think and have never thought that this game is too difficult, granted the learning curve may be steep for those new to the genre. the game however does show that you can be successful by adopting a certain "approach", and that this approach needs to be your own. As long as its based on solid fundamentals you can't go wrong.

I'd have to agree with the original point made by Cleon, I just wonder where I come in?
I have my own ideas and have tried (God, have I tried..) to implement them into my own games without any help but the majority (all) of these games failed because I simply don't understand the game enough to tackle it.
My latest attempt at the game, I have used my own framework as a basis and then many others have added their ideas to fill in the gaps - this is the only way I could ever play the game.
Much like Cleon originally, I'm not sure why I'm posting this or if it even makes sense, at least in context.
The thing is, I'm one of the people who failed to have success with FM07, but then I'm also now having success by using my own ideas, guided and helped by those who consistently have success.
Does this make any sense at all?
