I think there us a difference between all players retained and just say English players.

My fear is 20 years down the line in the save, I retained the English players now for some reason this Serie C2/C team have 8 English players in it.

You are right, this needs a healthy debate, so start up a thread and we will see what other people think.

I noticed as well when Some Conf North/South teams came up in the first year they had no players, which is a bit unrealistic.

I posted the following a little higher up, but it seemed to slip through un-noticed.

Regardless of what you tendency is with the Search Screen, no player should ever be signed unless he is first given the once over by one of your scouts.
Is this a rigid rule or are there exceptions made for players that you are able to get in to the club on trial? I've got to admit that I have signed players who I haven't been able to scout but whom I have been able to get in on trial .

How'd you know about them to sign them?

They had played for N.Ireland U19's in a game which featured one of my players. I was unable to scout but added them to my shortlist and then got a message saying that they had been released by N.Irish club.

Criag, Liam etc.

Simon, for the purposes of investigating the database size issue, used that-which-shall-not-be-named. He had played the same non-league team in cup competitions twice within a season, both times their squad was full of greys (he was using Huge database). Having a look at them using that-which-shall-not-be-named they actually had about 8 players within the database. (I'm sure Simon can correct any inaccuracies in the above).

So, (linking in with Jimbo's comments, as that's what the trickyx3 referred to) we have to think about which is most unbalancing - retaining players, or not retaining players. Hopefully the patch will resolve some of this issue.

With regard to retaining players...

I think the only reasonable way to play the game as it was on huge Db is to retain realistic Nations in the game you play.

If I played in UK I'd retain the Home Nations...no-one else.

The problem with retaining players IS that it unbalances the game wrt regens in favour of the retained Nation, so retaining one Nation would be stupid.

Even retaining the playable Nations, e.g. England, Portugal, Spain, Germany and Italy, would mean a game full of the five Nationalities and a diminishing of all others.

SI say the reason huge Db was done away with was because it interfered with the way the players were regenerated...I think retaining players has to be worse for the balance.

I reckon it's bloody stupid that they've done the research, have these players in the databse, but don't include them. What's the point????

Well I started my career without retaining any players, I really haven't seen any issues yet but then again I haven't been looking at the teams that were promoted to see if they had players. (That is what my scout does )

My tuppence worth would be this:

Retain players for the playable leagues in your game. No more, no less.

Wouldn't that mean in 2020 that whatever league you are playing in the countrty would be way stronger because they get more regens than any other countires.

Say my only playable league is England wouldn't that make it easier for them to win world cups European championships, and their clubs to win the Champions league etc?

Would Germany still be strong enough to knock them out on penalties

It's my understanding that since only the better players are loaded for a country when you don't retain players, the average quality of the non-retained countries will remain fairly constant. SI said that retaining players only really increases the number of inept numpties available for any given country (although probably not using those exact words).

Which for me means that yes, Germany will still knock England out on penalties.

In fact, the whole issue is redundant anyway if you only load one playable league, since the game is heavily biased towards clubs from that league.
