Default Birth place & where I live now

You’re a player and have been placed on the transfer list at Gateshead. You were born in Middlesborough and live in Harrogate. All follow me so far.

The boss at Eastbourne has expressed an interest in you. Apparently their scout saw you in the reserves and you impressed. You would be interested in signing up but The Rooks is where all the soft southerners live and besides a 400 (or whatever it is)mile round trip twice a week for training and a home match does not sound appealing. But nonetheless this could be your last chance at Saturday league football. Besides you’ve already told Roeder at Newcastle that £120,000 a week is some way short of you even considering wearing the Black and White of the ‘Toon. Whereas Southgate could tempt you with a fiver you pay him.

A midweek match could see you get home at 3 in the morning and your job at the bank could really suffer.

Anyway Mr Manager at Eastborough has a bid accepted and comes to see you to offer terms. £100pw over 52 weeks rather than for the season plus £10 win bonus. FECK OFF would be the answer I think most of us would offer.

We all strive for realism but the game does not include where I live in relation to the club I play for. Even if it did, would the player then be paid petrol money to attend training or home matches.

Think I’m telling porkies. Well, I live in and support my local team. Dover Athletic. The furthest player on our books lives in Watford. I don’t even know where Watford is in relation to Dover geographically other than it’s a northern town. Come to think of it anything north of Canterbury makes all towns northern and everyone of you a dirty northern scumbag.

The point is, as a club we cannot attract players from Birmingham, Liverpool. Etc Whereas if my home team club ever got promoted in FM07, I could recruit them and therefore lose the realism of the game.

I know it’s a game and we strive for realism in LLM but this one point makes me think that my Worcester side in FM07 buying a player from Margate is unrealistic, unless of course that player lived in Watford.

I guess what I trying to say is that SI Games ought to include ‘where I live now’ and add variables if you wanted to purchase player X from Gateshead even if he has to travel 500 miles to play a home game and pay his petrol and additonal perks.

Valid points, of xure.

I follow a local semi-professional team and all the guys have day jobs, and all have missed games because of work commitments, weddings, personal things, etc, and it would be excellent if they could be programmed into the game somehow too.

I 'role-play' this situation thus:

Player from far away moves to the town where we play and gets a day job here. I know, for example, that players who get taken on by Airbus UK are often offered a job in the Airbus factory as both incentive and compensation. Obviously if the player's day job is too good to quit and move away for, then it's likely that the player won't agree to play for the team.

It would be nice if SI could actually model this in the game, but until then there's always our imagination to fill in the gaps.

Would be great if they included it, but in all honesty I doubt they will. It will be a lot harder to sign players, just imagine the moaners of GQ. I guess it would also be quite hard to balance this. Would some teams end up with no players due to not attracting anybody? etc. And then there is the extra processing needed. And IMO this is not a big issue. As Elrawkum says, the guy could get a job in "our" city, which would solve the problem.

I actually haven't given this much thought. I don't know the fine geography of the UK well enough to be honest. IRL I don't follow the lower-leagues there on a weekly basis (apart from "my" team, whoever it may be), so I don't know where players for Redditch live IRL, and who is unlikely to sign for them due to distance, job etc.

I lean on the "get new job" explanation. Not ideal, but as I don't know the geography that well, I won't be arsed to check out whether it's realistic for this or that guy to sign for us on 100-200 a week.

I guess that it could be addressed through Youth Players. Notice that when they first appear they have their birthplace next to their name. Could it be introduced that they are unlikely to move away from that area.

Teams must have some sort of geographical relationships that are already coded into the game. Could a wage threshold be introduced where a player earns enough to

a) go full time and
b) make a living

It has always struck me as slightly unrealistic for e.g. that Muppet McStriker wants to move from East Stirlingshire to say Eastbourne at the other end of country for £50 a week.

Watford, north?! You have got to be kidding me!

Everyone knows that anyone who lives south of Middlesborough is a soft southern...

Watford is on the pretty much on the south coast.

I follow Gainsborough Trinity (Conference North) and one of the star youngsters went to France for about 6 months studying! It be great if this was programmed into FM. However wouldnt if **** you off if you were the manager and one of your best players decided he was going off abroad to study. I dunno what id do probably quit!!!
