I am currently managing FC Roskilde in the Danish 2nd Div. East which has 'B' teams. The first game of the season and it's KB (Kjobenhavns B) at home. Well the scout did his thing and advised me to watch out for one of their strikers who could carve us up. He was none other than the Swedish poof that bagged his country's first in the WC match against England last June.
I guess that's not so unrealistic. But the thing got me going was that only 457 punters turned up to see him go around. Now I know it's a 'B' side and it's a crap league, but wouldn't more people come out and pay peanuts to see a top line international player go around in their own back yard?
For the record he bagged a goal and we went down 2-1. In the circumstances I wasn't too unhappy considering I left my u17 keeper in goal forgetting I was giving him same games at the end of the last term
Well, if my local side somehow managed to blag an international into their side, I'd probably turn up to watch.
Having said that, though, I live 100 yards from their ground so I'd have no excuse, but people living more than a mile or two away might find better things to do.
The fact remains that I'd still be watching Enfield Town play, regardless of who was playing for them - International caps or no.
Back to the original question: I think that games against B-sides are poorly handled indeed.
I was really taking the **** when I started out with Fortuna Düsseldorf in FM2006 (nice place, ultra-modern stadium's costs are sky high, so it's a economic struggle), and my group had to play numerous B teams: Schalke, Werder, Hertha etc. Full of quality players. Of course the faithful 250 supporters all turned up
