Media, 23rd; Board & Fans, fight bravely; Title odds, 40-1 (yeah right!).

Try to improve strike-force with young prospects, with mixed results: major clear-out of out-of-contract dead-wood.

Tough start: 1 win & 8 draws in 17 sees us hovering around relegation. A bit of an injury crisis leads to a starting squad I'd never have chosen otherwise and we start to score a few goals. We go into the run-in in 13th but a disappointing finish sees us slip to 15th. Improved attendances almost wipes out debt. Board disappointed with team but thrilled with me.

Highlights:
New young, ex-Man U. academy, striker scores league's goal of the season. Home produced AML steps up during injury crisis and acquits himself well. I win competition to see who can get most hyphens into a single sentence.

Lowlights:
Going down to Sutton Utd in the 1st round of the FAC. In fact 1st round exits from all cups was pretty naff.

Pre-season; complete inability to attract anything better than existing squad so bring in couple more 'prospects'. Sheff. U. offer backup GK and Portsmouth offer Striker for £0k who join us at January window: makes no difference at all. Early on ultra-reliable goalie, now in his mid 20s, inexplicably loses form & his attributes plunge. Rest him & tweak training but by Xmas no improvement & value has dropped from £22k to £3k so released on a free.


Good start takes us 9th after 6 matches but the rest of the season is a real grind. Many changes of personnel and tactics & a combination of encouragement & arse-kicking sees us slide to 22nd. Slight improvement sees us up to 19th with a couple of months to go. Poor performances by opponents, a tight table and results elsewhere favouring us and we end up a thoroughly undeserved 13th.; the stats below virtually identical to last season. But attendances continue to climb & finances getting stronger.

Request improvement in training facilities & board can't agree quickly enough.

This is odd. Our chairman has been in love with the club and thinking that he'll never leave from the start. Starting our 3rd season in L2, fully professional, £300 grand in the black, upgrading training facilities and he's now only "happy to stay".

Am I not spending enough of his money anymore?

Media, 17th; Board, Steer clear of relegation; Fans, Invest in new players.

Sinking feeling when I see that QPR have joined the division.

Fall out with new GK as he continues to let in every single SOT and at end of transfer window quickly ship him out on a free to League 1 Doncaster. He goes straight into a 1st team he's never met before & produces a series of brilliant performances, gets loads of praise in the media and is valued at £190k within weeks. My backup, who's sat patiently in the reserves for years, does ok. November sees all my Goalies crocked for weeks to months & I can't even tempt a young loanee from Wolves who's got the a*se about lack of 1st team chances. So I'm forced to bring in another on a free.

While this is sorted we field a home grown 17yo who moonlights as a store window dummy. Morale collapses, strikers go on strike, almost everyone underperforms & we slide from 9th to 19th. Again, really tight division and a rally of sorts (grinding out draws) sees us finish 15th: in spite of better points total and goal dif. than last season.
