They had a decent team, not many stars, a D/WB L probably their best player. I had no transfer funds and the club was already in debt. The board and fans expected mid-table mediocrity.
2006 - Irish First Division
A pretty dull season kept me in touch with the top two spots for most of the season mainly due to everyone being so average. I finished 2nd despite winning only 1 of my last 4 games and finished 3 points ahead of Dundalk. Player of the season was a 36yo midfielder.
Final Pos: 2nd (6pts behind Galway), p36 15-12-9 pts57
League Cup: 2nd round lost to Galway 3-1
Senior Challenge Cup: 3rd round lost to Premier division Longford 2-0
League Champions: Cork City
2007 - Irish Premier Division
I had to rely on free transfers again, so the team was pretty much the one that was promoted. We started off decently, but soon slipped into a relegation battle. We ended up with the worst defence and the second worse attack, but managed to finish one off the bottom in the relegation play-off. Lost the 1st leg 3-1 to Monagahan Utd, but won the second 2-0, then the penalty shootout 4-2.
The board also gave me Arsenal as a parent club even though i hadn't asked for one. This has done absolutely nothing so far, they won't even play me in a friendly.
Final Pos: 11th (1pt behind UCD, 5 ahead of Galway), p33 7-5-21 pts26
League Cup: 2nd round, lost to Sligo Rovers 2-1
Senior Challenge Cup: QF, lost to Bray Wanderers 2-1
League Champions: Shelbourne
2008 - Irish Premier Division
Still no money, a few more free transfers and youth players. Conceded 5 in each of the 1st two games, didnt win til the 12th match and was bottom all season. We had a mini revival towards the end, but ended up bottom, 6pts behind Shamrock Rovers. Again, we had the worst defence.
Final Pos: 12th, p33 5-9-19 pts24
League Cup: QF, lost to 1st division Kilkenny City 3-1
Senior Challenge Cup: 3rd round, lost to Bohemians 5-1
League Champions: Cork City
So, back where we started. The squad is much better than last time we were here, so promotion should be a possibility. The board and fans are expecting it and we have been made second favourites. Still no transfer funds.
Had a decent start, but faded away badly in the middle, eventually finished 17pts off a play-off place. Everyone was expecting promotion, so I wasn 't too popular either.
Final Pos: 6th, p36 14-8-14 pts 50 (Shamrock Rovers were champions)
League Cup: 2nd round, lost to Premier Divison Cork City 1-0
Senior Challenge Cup: 3rd round, lost to Cork City again, 2-1.
2010 - Finn Harps - Irish First Division
Started off half decently again, but also again were ridiculously inconsistent and very averagely mid-table. Started applying for new jobs which didn't amuse the board or fans and was sacked in September while in 4th place. Harps eventually finished 3rd.
Applied for lots of jobs, mainly in Ireland and Scandanvia. In November, was finally offered a job at Zaglebie who were in the relegation zone in the Polish Premier League. (if anyone is questioning the realism of an Irish manager going to Poland, I justified it on the basis I signed a Pole at Harps from Waterford )
2010/11 - Zaglebie - Polish Premier Division
They had a decent-ish squad and a bit of money, so I was able to make a few signings in the January transfer window. Results were up and down, but I finally sealed safety with a 4-0 thumping of Widzew in the penultimate match.
Final Pos: 12th, p30 9-6-15, pts33 (3pts ahead of the relegation zone)
2011/12 - Zaglebie - Polish Premier Division
Plenty of transfer dealing in the summer, brought some new faces in. Board expected a mid-table position. Started brightly, but soon went very very pear-shaped. Was in the relegation zone by the end of October and was sacked on the 20th November after just over a year with Zaglebie in 15th.
Back to the job centre. Went on holiday for a bit. Amusingly, Zaglebie finished 15th and were relegated into obscurity (no Polish lower divisions loaded)
Came back from holiday to see a job offer from Tonsberg in the Norwegian Second Division. They had secure finances and a very young squad so I went for it.
2012 - Tonsberg - Norwegian Second Division Group 1
Spent £45k on about 10 players including three random Tanzanians from Lyngdal in the lower divisions. Board was quite happy to avoid relegation, but I had a much better squad than that on paper. Unfortunately only the champions are promoted and Norwegian giants Lillestrom had inexplicably ended up in Division 2, and typically in my group.
Bobbed up and down the league, finished a pretty disappointing mid-table in the end.
Final Pos: 9th p26 8-9-9 pts33 (champions: unbeaten Lillestrom)
Norwegian Cup: 1st round, lost 4-0 to First Division Stromsgodset
The team is pretty young, so better hopes for next season, especially as Lillestrom are gone.
Old Team Updates
Finn Harps:
2011 - 3rd in Division One
2012 - Champions of Division One
