It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

It does make a difference, and you can see it on the field. A deep line tends to defend deeper and drop much deeper before putting in a tackle, tends to push up less when the opposition have the ball.

The difference between a team playing attacking football with a high line and with a deep one is quite interesting. The deeper one affords you far more space.

You also get far fewer balls over the top of the defence with a deeper line. It definitely makes a difference, though whether you can see it from set pieces like you're suggesting I'm not sure.

True, allthough I never won a single match where I put DLine to Push up.

@ Millie - I suppose what I was getting at was that I was trying to show the diff between the def lines via screen shots. Set piece situations seemed the most logical but I have had a few drinks tonight and messed my pics up!

I'll give it another go tomorrow and post my findings unless I am wasting my time?

IRL if a team plays deep/pushup it would be visable during a set piece imo.

Sorry if I mistake you but do you mean a set piece that you are in control of theball or not? Because the D/line only comes into effect when you DON'T have the ball.

I don't know - positioning on set pieces is pretty much standard. I mean, you would expect some variation for sure, but not a huge amount I wouldn't have thought.

I agree you should perhaps see more of an immediate "in your face" effect from moving the d-line (like we sort of had in '06), but if you watch the game and watch the play of a team with a deep and a high line you will see a difference.

Unless I'm just deluding myself to make myself feel like I'm doing something useful by fiddling with it.

Ahhhh, I have been thinking this for a while - it makes sence why I am looking in the wrong places! I'll look into this Dayle

@Mille - When I say set piece, I meant the opponents goal kick.

Even with goal kicks you're not going to drop too far at the actual goal kick. Maybe they'll run back as soon as the ball is kicked, but most teams stand just inside their own half keeping an eye on the opposition strikers and wingers. Too much deeper and they'll invite to opposition too close, too much higher and the strikers will be free (you can't be offside from a goal kick).

I bet as soon as the ball is in the air there will be movemement in the back line. That's something to look at.
