I haven't found this topic addressed yet, sorry if it has.
Something's been irking me recently playing FM07.
If a player has jumping 20, then does this determine the height he can reach also including his natural height? What I'm trying to say is does a player who stands 5 foot 9 and jumps 20 jump as high as a 6 foot 8 player who also jumps 20, or is the jumping independent of height?
Hope this makes sense, I'd be very interested to know
Height is a factor not considered in the match engine. This means a 5 feet 10 player with junmping 20 can jump as high as a 6 feet 7 player with jumping 20.
This also means that tall players who can't jump (Crouch I'm talking about you) are given a good jumping rating and so on.
Thanks for that. That's a little disappointing as it's more unrealistic. The thing is that in real life, if you get a short player that can jump really high (I'm thinking Cahill and co.) there are factors that affect them in the way that they do not affect a tall player jumping a little bit (Crouch).
If you're several inches off the ground to contest headers then a.) you have less control in heading than a player who only needs to jump a little bit and b.) you're far more likely to get injured by being toppled over and not being able to get proper footing
I hope this is something that's addressed in the next version, anyone else agree?
Agreed, but then you'll get a bunch of people complaining about how difficult it is to tell if a 6' 5" player with jumping 4 is as good as a 5' 10" player with jumping 15 and we'll have all sorts of debates raging about how much each jumping point is etc. etc. etc.
Don't know really, you could keep the system the same as it is, just tip the balance slightly in favour of the taller player in 50:50 balls. The taller player wouldn't always win the ball as both would be reaching the same height, but might win it in more cases as he doesn't have to time his jump so perfectly. The resulting header might be more accurate too.
Personally I'd like to see hight tied in with jumping in some way, or for height to at least be more than just cosmetic in the game.
With the current system if I had a 5'4" striker with a jumping attribute of 20 he'd be able to jump higher, and therefor be more likely to win headers, than a 6'8" striker with a jumping attribute of 17.

And where is this coming from?
I see it this way: a relatively short player with good jumping attribute might be able to win headers against taller player with low jumping. However, other things equal, taller player has much better chance to win headers. Imo, the most important attributes here are positioning (off the ball) and anticipation.
Actually it's relatively easy to check. Find a really tall player with jumping and header below 8 and see if scout says "he is weak in air".
i think the jumping attribute refers to the maximum height a player's head can make contact with a ball flying through he air. and that is just a guess.
